    Day of Defeat: Source Comparisons

As with every major game remake released on an updated engine, there comes a point where somebody, somewhere does a comparison between the two generations. Day of Defeat: Source is no exception to that rule. Over at bit-tech is a great article that showcases a number of the similarities and differences between the old and new generation of Day of Defeat. The comparison of DoD: Source also includes a look at the differences between Low Dynamic Range lighting and High Dynamic Range lighting.

    pretty pictures.

the Source engine seems to make ugly games look nice (thank god). I always loved the gameplay, but looking at the graphics compared to other games always made me wish for an updated version.

Now if only they would bring HDR over to CS:S ...

the hdr looks kinda retarded in some instances, its almost too much, but most of the time its alright.

Are you talking about it annoys you when you play or are you basing it on the screenshot? Because the brightness is only temporary and adjusts quickly or is in the distance. It's not amazing like dynamic lighting was when it was introduced but it's nice.

I was going to mention that. I think there was more anticipation for the DoD:S release here than there was for CS:S.

Too bad both DODS and CSS are terrible.

Surely not, people were clawing each others organs out to see screenshots after the lan center only launch.

Also the whole DOD reworking was trumpeted for so long how could it not be covered here? Compared with known upcoming list for cs-s which currently comprises of a skin and map or two, it's not hard to see which is more newsworthy atm.

CS: Source isn't exactly a huge news maker at the present moment. Don't worry guys, we still remember our roots.

Well of course they would be. The CS:S beta started before Half-Life 2 was released. It was the very first time people could check out the graphics, physics, and playability of the HL2 engine while playing Counter-Strike: Source. I think a large amount of those people were there solely for the purpose of testing out the source engine.

While sadly I couldn't even launch DOD:S without manually setting launch parameters for res/refresh rate (no error messages unlike CS:S... just wouldn't run, haha), once I finally got it up and going... it's a lot of fun. While part of me misses a few of the classes/weapons that were removed... the balance and variety and feel and HDR are all wonderful... had a great time playing it.

Much smoother launch than CS:S had, in my opinion... couldn't be much more pleased, though I'm still looking forward to a few more maps.
