    Minor HL2 Engine Update

Jess Cliffe has posted word on the Steam website that the Half-Life 2 engine has been updated with optimizations from the Xbox port, and has had its capabilities extended in preparation for the Day of Defeat: Source launch coming up on Monday:
Updates to Steam have been released. The update will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. This release includes a number of very specific CPU and memory footprint optimizations brought over from the Half-Life 2: XBOX development codebase. The release also includes all of the engine groundwork to enable the Day of Defeat: Source launch that will happen Monday, September 26 at 3:00 PDT.

I've heard of some issues with this update. There was already a hotfix released shortly after this update to fix an error with 3rd party mods. Also, mani and other plugin creators needed to update their plugins tonight to comply with the changed files. I haven't really had any problems personally, so I can't complain.

No..There is no HDR in CS:S, so it also can't take your FPS down.. I've noticed no change in fps on my PC after this update..

It completely some destroyed third party mods for Source, especially Dystpia, which Valve broke. The team can't even do anything until they update the SDK, either, so Valve effectively killed Dystopia until they want to allow it to be fixed.

They're working on the 3rd party mod fix.

As for the lower FPS, bump your DirectX level back down to where it was pre-update. This update forced everyone into DX9+ level and to those unable to run that level, you will experience lowered FPS.

HDR seems to be on by default... you can see it on the floor tiles in the B tunnel on Dust2. It might not make much of a difference when you have a nice GPU, but my ol pcx5750 chugs away at it unless I bump it down to blooming from full HDR.

Dan it, just when I discovered Dystopia, VALVe had to change the lighting.

#9> that's just regular shader + bump maps... isn't it?
