    Half-Life 1 Engine and CS 1.6 Updates

New updates for such an old engine? You know it! Valve just released a new update for Half-Life 1 engine and Counter-Strike. Looks like VAC2 is now the default anti-cheat method for Half-Life 1 games! Excellent. Restart your Steam clients to grab these delicious

    updates.
      Counter-Strike

    • Fixed menu exploit on join that spawned you into the server but moved you around as you were in spectator mode

      Half-Life 1: Engine

    • Servers will default to starting up using VAC2

    • Added "sv_uploadmax" cvar to limit the max size (in MB) a client can use for a custom resource (i.e spray decals)

    • Added "-sport" command line option to allow you to specify the VAC2 port the server should use

    • Don't allow servers to execute "alias" commands on clients

(prevents an infinite loop exploit using alias commands from servers)
    [break="the rest of the changes"]
    • Fixed S2C_CONNREJECT packet exploit causing the game to quit from any currently connected game server (found by Gavin Cotter)

    • Fixed crash exploit caused by specially crafted packet triggering a crash in the resource upload code (found by Gavin Cotter)

    • Fixed infinite loop in richtext/textentry control caused by

large sets of spaces between words wrapping around line ends (found by Kristian Hermansen)

    • Fixed possible lockup when refreshing a login ticket

    • Disabled old style server queries by default.

Vac for me means Valve Allows Cheaters. At least it's what I've been experiencing.

I think that works better as: VAC2 = "Valve Allows Cheaters, too". *wink*

But seriously, I've not seen very many cheaters on CS:S. Maybe I've just been getting lucky. I've also noticed that it translates into getting accused of cheating far less often as well. My brother recently visited me and played some CS on my computer after having sworn it off for about a year, and he found that he still enjoyed playing, so I brushed the dust off of 1.6 and started playing with him again after having been exclusively a Source player for a while.

Folks, it's amazing how jumpy admins on 1.6 are. I guess when you see so dang many hackers, suddenly everybody's a hacker. I haven't been running into that mentality very much on Source. And I had no clue how refreshing it was. There's a fine line between extreme vigilance and paranoia. One server on Sunday had me jump through an amazing number of hoops to get unbanned. "Don't worry, if you're not really a hacker, we'll unban you immediately! All you have to do is hunt around for a while for those screenshots we made your client take, convert them to .jpg with the graphics editor of your choice, create an account on our forums, authenticate the account, fill out a post on the forums in a very precise format, upload the screenshots in your post except that won't work so you need to create an account with a public image hoster, authenticate that account, figure out how to use it, figure out what the URLs for your images are, link them in your post, and wait for us to get around to unbanning you! Nothing difficult at all!!" I wonder how many innocent players just don't bother, incorrectly inflating the perceived "true hacker:paranoid admin" ratio.

Anyway, I'll get off my soap box. Sorry for the spam.

When I see someone speedhacking, I know it's a cheater. That's as easy as abc, 123 la la la.

          And that's just one example.

I get called cheater most of the time on pub (nb) servers too. That's no big deal.
