    The Weekly Steam News Update

In typical fashion, the new Steam news update from Valve just came out. Included in this week's edition is a focus on a handful of user-made mods on the Source engine, as well as information on the Valve tournament page. The first winner of the gold package contest was also announced.
This coming Monday, July 18th, one of the winners of the "Win a Trip to Valve" contest will be arriving here at our offices. Lawrence S. Burstein PhD, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida purchased the "Gold" edition of Half-Life 2 during the contest timeframe and was our first winner.

    The Weekly Steam News Update

The latest edition of the Steam weekly news update from Valve showcases a couple of high resolution screenshots for Day of Defeat: Source. In addition to these screenshots, Valve also makes note that the Lost Coast is nearing completion and will soon be released via Steam.
Play-testing Day of Defeat: Source has taken over the Valve offices. We're expecting DoD fans and new players alike to have a blast with the game when it's released later this summer. Polishing work is being done right now on the player animations, as well as lighting work on the various maps. Current favorite features include the new grenade stun effect, and the ability to deploy the machine gun on any surface.

In other news, HL2: Lost Coast (the upcoming free Half-Life 2 map for Half-Life 2 owners which showcases HDR rendering technology) is nearing completion and will be released soon on Steam. We're going to include a bit of extra content with Lost Coast, which we haven't mentioned yet... watch this space for details.
Extra content that hasn't been mentioned yet? I can't wait to see what it is!

      The Weekly Steam News Update

Today holds the weekly Steam news update. This week's update is about SourceTV and the Half-Life 2: CTF match between Valve and the team behind HL2: CTF mod, which will be broadcasted for us all to see.
The gauntlet has been thrown down once again by the CTF team, and we're more than happy to meet the challenge. This time around, however, we'll be using SourceTV so the entire community can watch the match as it happens. This should eliminate any question as to the true victor.

We're tentatively scheduled to do this in the next couple of weeks. Once we get closer to the main event we'll be letting everyone know how to connect to a SourceTV server and watch the match as it happens, along with the date and time. The CTF team has recently released version 1.5 of their game, so if you'd like to be more familiar with it before spectating, you can download it here.
This should be an interesting match to watch. Will Valve be able to hold ground against the HL2: CTF mod team?

Well, they are providing free accounts for them, and faster support if needed. This is not the same as the Cybercafé Program.
Neither the retail licenses nor the Steam Subscriber Agreement terms allow a licensee to host a tournament. The Tournament Agreement is free and grants you the license to use and display identified games ("Games') in your tournament.

The whole point of the weekly update is for them to let us know whats going on - I dont care about mods - I can research that myself.

They have enough projects that Im interested in (aftermath, dods, tfc, sin) to talk about and give us insight to and they just tottally cop out.

                      Annoying as hell.

they show what mods that are being made so the mods can get some publicity for the lazy people who dont want to research.

Yeah, I am actually glad to see a shift in focus to some outside development every once in a while. Good for the mod teams, quick and easy for us, and further improves VALVe's image of supporting mod development and ongoing game additions... works all around, really.

That said, I'd mainly like a section of Steampowered or something to view these projects, but independent fan sites can also maintain big mod lists, as we've seen in the past for the original Half-Life. I do really like the "Browse Games" feature featuring the "Third-Party Games" tab within Steam... nice to have it a lot of options right at your fingertips.

halflife2.net has the most abundant mod list ive seen thus far, released and not released. I was vehemently surprized and impressed at how many great mods are under-going creation right now.

I don't wanna whine or something as I think DoD:S being almost done is good news, but I think those DoD:S playermodels look really dull.. Low detail textures or something? Hopefully they're not the final ones..

I can't wait for that Lost Coast HDR level.. And I wonder what the 'extra content' is gonna be.. :P
