Disable Sound Downloading

Are you tired of trying to join a server and having to wait for all those little sounds to download such as "ultra kill" and "first blood"? Well, now it seems that you don't have to. A new cvar has been discovered which disables your CS:S client from downloading sounds from those servers that force sound downloads. Add the simple cvar below to your autoexec config and enjoy the quick server connections and no annoying sounds. Thanks to Valve for adding this and to Matt over at the SteamPowered Forums for finding this cvar and sharing it with all of us:

cl_downloadfilter "nosounds"

Although I've always used cl_allowdownload "0" but that stops everything including sprays (yay) and maps (nay).

Don't forget to delete your sounds folder. That should get rid of the annoying sounds completely.

The community has already stepped up to the plate with the somewhat effective "anti-sound" packs, which were basically empty wave files you replaced the unreal sounds with. Unfortunately there was always some idiot admin who'd put them in different folders just to force you to have to d/l and play them. This cvar is just the ticket =)

I hate the dumb mods that use these. However it is not so much of an issue downloading if the server has a "sv_urldownload" set. I think it is more annoying having to listen to them honestly.



But, not to flame Valve or anything, this is a very useful CVAR ... I do not understand why they choose not to inform us that they added this cvar in the changelog?



Also, has anyone seen in console if there are any other varients it would auto complete with. ... (i.e. cl_downloadfilter "nosprays")

I think this will be very useful for some of the slower downloads but I enjoy hearing the sounds from time to time.
