CPL and ESWC Updates

The next round of CPL action continues today with three CS: Source matches and four current CS 1.6 matches.



Current CS 1.6 matches (Map: de_nuke):

The ESWC also continues today with the final round teams falling into place. Team mouz has already defeated wNv (16 - 14) to move on to the semifinals. The other teams in the quarter finals have yet to play.

While I don't think ESPN is really ever gonna cover stuff like this... yeah, it'd be cool if there was a videocast we could just watch, or a much more convenient way of getting HLTV streams.



I mean, if you could put a link to a HLTV stream on your webpage, have it auto-launch properly and connect, AND be able to have more than just the match itself displayed (ie, have options for extra audio commentary / closed caption commentary / live ambient audio from the room / etc), then it'd actually be a useful media.



I like the idea of the extra resolution and bandwidth savings that having everything rendered on your machine locally offers vs. having it shown via streaming video. Sadly, though, it's just so limited... LAN events have an air of excitement when you're there that just isn't captured by a straight gameplay feed. You need the extra audio to really get into it, kind of like listening to the game on the radio when you can't watch it on TV.



The other thing is, the auto-director feature, while a good idea, needs to be more comprehensive and allow for time shifts. If you've ever watched a CCTV basketball game, you know how completely different it is from watching a game on network television. Yeah, the crowd in big games helps, but the instant replays and camera zooms really help bring the interest level up. HLTV needs the same abilities available if the server operator wants to take advantage of them.



With features like that, I can imagine HLTV being an easy enough and interesting enough for people to actually want to watch during events like this. As it is, though... there's just not enough ease or appeal for the bulk majority of us to pay much attention, sadly. And if we--the longtime fans of CS--aren't even interested, how much less interested is your average joe?



Well, I guess we can always hold out hope for ESPN 9 - "The Nueve"

Strange how poker's popularity exploded, and is televised constantly. Oh yeah, and it requires much less physical movement than CS does.



Chess is a sport, by the way.



edit: I really like the TSN video stream. I've seen and played countless CS matches, but I had never seen how a WC3 match worked, and without having the game, I couldn't spectate one. I have to say, I was dissapointed at how the competitive game actually plays out, but it was still cool to see.
