      Oh no, a forum post!

I bet a lot of people would support escape maps being added to Source. We all know a lot of people want the shield in Source, too. The people that post on these things never shrug off an oppurtunity for Valve to add something stupid and novel to the game, because more must be better, right?! I don't think so, because VIP maps have always fallen flat. VIP maps never end up with teamplay, they end up with everyone running around killing each other (just like every other CS mode) and the VIP getting killed by one person with a desert eagle near the helicopter.

We all know that defusion maps are fun. Why can't we "petition" Valve to make new, creative de maps instead of re-hashing what wasn't fun from CS 1.6?
While I absolutely loathe the idea of any sort of online "petition" there does seem to be some want for as_ maps. I personally wouldn't mind the inclusion of them so long as the inclusion does not interfere with other areas of the game development.

You know damn well if there was a "petition" to make new, creative de maps that the as_ and cs_ and every other non de_ fans would whine and complain. There would also be complaints of "where's my VAC2" and "fix the laggy hitboxes", perhaps some "change this and this in such and such a map" in opposition to the inclusion of yet another de_ map.

Either way, not everyone is going to be happy with every change. I await that day where the inclusion of a new feature, the removal of something, or any singular change to CS is met with unanimous praise.

Add as_ functionality or don't. Either way, people are still going to complain. I personally don't mind any of the changes that have had an impact on gameplay. People just need to learn to adjust.

The difference is that practically every CS player is a de_ fan since it's the best game type available. My point is that time spent making as_ maps and adding its functionality to CS is kind of a waste, when Valve could fix all the issues you've listed and focus on making tighter and diverse de_ maps.

Personally I don't think Valve should have to port anything more to CS:S. CS 1.6 still exists, if someone wants to play as_oilrig why can't they do it on a 1.6 server? Source should be a platform for new and exciting content, not the old stuff. Surprisingly, not even the old stuff that wasn't fun.

But if Source is a "port" of sorts, should not that older content be ported over to Source from 1.6? Granted, it was never touted as a direct port, but so far it's as close as you can get without calling it CS 1.7. Eventually there is going to probably come the time where 1.6 is phased out, not by Valve, but by the customers who have finally moved on to the latest version (Source). Be it a couple years from now, or a couple weeks from now (unlikely). People are always going to demand that the old content be ported over then including this game mode.

Granted, while everybody may be a fan of the de_ maps, why exlude the portion of the community who may not like them as much as they like the as_ maps? If nothing else, the as_ gametype offers a change of pace from the typical 'bomb this area or that area' or 'rescue these hostages.' I know I even sometimes enjoy the different gameplay that is the fy_ maps simply because it's different from de or cs.

Now, you say Source should be full of new and exciting content? Why bother with a CS1.6 and CZ hybrid to begin with then? If they really wanted to go with something new and exciting, they would have scrapped CS: Source and put all of their efforts behind CS 2. Right? Evidently, they are trying to port over the old content to Source, so if they're going that route, why not port it all over and include the as_ map type as well? I'm not saying to go for it immediately, but at some point after the bug fixes they should. Otherwise, Cliffe and Co. might as well focus fully on 2.0.

Please Rizzuh, I can't believe you have made a long post about how CSS should not have AS maps and just have DE maps. Arn't you CS of old?

Surely you older players will remember it was nice to have a nice variety of game modes. It was always a treat when the next map on rotatation was an AS map. It gave the game extra life as apposed to DE DE DE DE DE DE all the time, I think Valve should add at least two AS maps to CSS to give the game variety, this is a teamplay game afterall, and AS really was a nice addition, and would be great to see it return.

Because form my own personal experience, I've never quite had that enjoyment with CSS I had with say CS on the HL1 tech, maybe it's because CSS mainly concentrates on the "popular" maps which are mostly DE apart from office. You see, it get's a bit boring playing the same game mode over and over, it's always nice to have a variety.

              Aight guys.

Jess also said that apparently they do get a bunch of e-mail from people wanting the VIP gameplay back..

As lots of people have been asking me to do (this is Halflife_84 in the flesh - or text), There is a binked version of the interview (complete with my voice asking the questions) coming shortly, as soon as Fileplanet posts the 330 Mb .exe (Bink format)

It's a lot nicer looking as well.

              sorry bout the codec problems...

Why yes, people do love their VIP maps:

Oh noes! check who made that thread! I love as_ maps espically oilrig.

Ok here's my opinion *takes a breath in*:

Counter-strike: source is a port of CS 1.6 on the HL1 engine to the HL2 engine, therefore as Zips said, all the content from CS 1.6 should be in CSS. DE_ maps work in a way no other scenario will ever work and they deserve there popularity. AS_ maps, along with CS_ maps, have some flaws such as, for CS_ maps, cts can kill two hostages and just rescue the other two, and for AS_ maps, the round can be over for everyone in a short time in the VIP dies.

AS_ maps just need teamwork basically, which is something which people do not do a lot in CS, but when you do get the CTs of there butts to protect the VIP, I personally can find that scenario funner than any other scenario.

As somebody in a previous post said, if Valve are not going to make AS_ maps then they should atleast give you the option to make them in Hammer, which would therefore give the people who want to play oilrig and tundra again they can make it.

On a note about oilrig, dose anyone else think that it would love brilliant in source? I can imagine seeing dead bodies floating around in the little pool area (if the source engine in capabl of that, which I think it is), I can also imagine, in the distance seeing the sea cliffs for land on one side, and on the others seeing cargo's.

edit: I made a thread with the whole interview written @ the steam forums btw for anyone who dosen't want to download it: Click Me

They would probably have to reverse the spawn points then.

A note about ES gameplay before I discuss AS maps. You can still play es_ maps in CS1.6... but no one does. I haven't seen a single es_ map on a server for years, and before that when I did, no one was ever in it. Simply put, it's a gameplay option that the community decided they do not want, showing their opinion with their lack of any players.

Now onto assassination maps. I personally love oilrig, and it happens to be my single favorite CS map ever. It was the first map I ever played, strangely, and I absolutely hated it. Eventually I got over TFC, though, and when I came back to CS and fell in love with it... oilrig remained that special map that just had it all. If you're in the mood to be a lone gunman, you can join the Ts and try to pick off people in a million different ways from various hiding spots.

As a CT, though, the real fun began. Sure, sometimes you get a retarded team and/or VIP, with every team member trying to lead their own direction as the VIP blazes ahead of his escorts towards the waiting Ts. Yeah, it happened sometimes. But other rounds...

I've been on servers with guys that made me feel like we'd been playing together for years. A coordinated effort by most of the team to push through one path, the lead escorts taking out any resistance, the rear guards defeating any flanking maneuvers, and the VIP staying securely out of harm's way until just the right moment for that final dash to the objective.

That is what CS is all about to me. Not another bomb/defuse rush to kill some crates, but rather a group of us together, protecting one guy against foes all around us. That is what made me love this game.

Sure, I still like de_ maps and cs_ maps, and have fun playing these alternate styles. When it comes down to the essence of what I like about CS, though, it's all in the as_ maps.

Props to FAF, Equalizer! and Zips for their insight thus far.

Rizzuh, on the other hand... I dunno what you're talking about man, but the last thing I'd like to see is more silly de_ maps. There are already tons of them out there to be played, but most people still stick with the few they like, so what will a few new ones accomplish?

Either way, though, I similarly dislike online "petitions" and whether or not I get a chance to play oilrig in Source, I'm always happy to see some progress, change, or additions to this game, whatever that may entail. Thanks for the interesting and informative interview there, Jason X. :)

i like vip games to a certain extent... it requires a bigger part on teamplay but the maps have their down falls. in cs 1.6 oilrig people could camp ANYWHERE and it was just an insane awp map basically.

if they add vip to source i hope they bring alot of good maps, also a well constructed vip model thats not like the new friggin gay ct model thats so camoflauged that you cant see em on certain map area's.

Shutup, as_ maps blow ass hard and you all know it. Don't try to play the "look at me I'm retro-CS" card and pretend to like this garbage. There's a damn good reason es_ maps phased out entirely, and as_ maps are unpopular: because the gameplay sucks.

Sure, CS is a team game, to an extent. But you get a stupid VIP (and considering it's most likely a public server, you're going to get stupid people more often than not) and the game is miserable. If the T's have any sort of collective brain, killing the VIP is so ridiculously easy that the fun of the game is sucked dry quickly.

Having your weapons restricted to the crappiest of crap weapons also sucks. No one likes those guns, except for those people who like to pretend they're good with the Mac10 or UMP. Who do you guys think you're kidding?

If this were a simple question of to have or not to have, I'd say go for it. I can't stand as_ maps, but like people attracted to scat porn, you guys are out there. But as we've seen, Valve hardly has their act together in Source. I'd rather them not waste their time on a stupid and unpopular game mode when there's huge problems to be fixed.

I'd like to see them stop wasting their time with cs_ maps too, but I know alot of people enjoy the maps and atleast the gameplay is decent. Office used to be one of my favorite maps when I sucked at the game. This game isn't about extreme teamwork and coordination, it's about fast paced, non-stop action. as_ maps fail to deliver in both aspects, and I really hope Valve doesn't waste their time trying to breathe life back into this dead gamemode.

"lolol now the VIP can kick over barrelz this rules!"
