    Lost Coast Impressions

Those lucky enough to be at E3 from IGN have first hand impressions of the Lost Coast.
A lot of us have been following the Lost Coast deal, and we've seen the trailer, but it's still pretty amazing to see it in person. Although it was a rolling demo and not something the presenter was interacting with (let alone one of us schleps on the show floor), it was easy to see what HDR does for the Half Life 2 engine. Not only does high-dynamic range really seem to complete the visual bouquet, but they've also increased facial complexity to make people look even more realistic than before.
The preview also mentions that the improved visual effects will require a high-end computer, but the effects have the option to be turned off. A Valve representative said that HDR will be partially implemented into Half-Life 2 in a future patch as well. It won't be a full conversion though, as completely redoing the lighting in the entire game will generate a download over five gigabytes in size.

E3 is a trade show, so industry professionals only. That could be anything from a game developer to part of the gaming media, but you have to supply credentials to be able to buy a pass.

Sometimes gaming magazines or developers will be given the go-ahead to give out a few passes in competitions too but it's very rare and obviously far from a sure-fire way of getting in.

                    Curious, this...
It won't be a full conversion though,
                    half-life 2 content.gcf - 838 MB

                    source engine.gcf - 69 MB

                    source materials.gcf - 1061 MB

                    source models.gcf - 449 MB

                    HL2 folder ~ 205 MB

                    -------------------------------

                    Total: 2.56 GB
as completely redoing the lighting in the entire game will generate a download over five gigabytes in size.
Even if you had to completely re-download every single model, texture, map, and source engine file (instead of just updating the relevant files / parts of files) I'm only seeing 2.5 GB of existing data here... what's going on?
                    • am I missing something?

                    • are they saying that HDR will require an additional 2.5 gigs of data?

                    • are they just horrible at addition, or

                    • are they feeling lazy and figured 5 gigs sounded like a good excuse?
                    Just wondering... :)

                    These two seem likely.

I think this is their reaction for the latest hardware survey, on the result pages I've seen that 5-6% of the users has x800/6800 cards, perhaps they don't want to crash the network for them. but steam should be able to download only for people who has those cards. so.. they're too lazy to redo all of the maps.

I agree on the lazyness of redoing the maps. It would be a nice change for us X800\6800 users, but seems a bit unfair for those with not up to date cards to not be able to try it at all. Like I will say my Alienware 7700 laptop with a X800 compared to my Desktop with the X800, the laptop totally beats my desktop, even though they are about the sametype of system specs.

But, my friend who's going to E3, might get me in ^^. I can't wait to see this stuff finished and playable, time to beat HL2 again.

                          Someone bragging about owning laptops?

Look, it will run ok on my machines 1 to 20. And on 48% of my laptops.

F... off... what it has to do with the subject being discussed here?

                          Edit:bla.
