I wonder if we really needed the poker comparison to get to the point that there isn't enough money in esports? Seems like the fact far more people are playing poker (and have been for centuries), is why there's more money in it, not because the tournaments are better set up. If cs had as many players as poker, the money would flow like cranial fluid from a headshot.

This really is pushing it, i can't believe people are comparing a computer game to poker or even sports. It really makes me sad indeed. It's a game, please take it for what it is.

my opinion:

gambling money is at the heart of how poker works; with videogames, however, the core component is having fun. it isn't realistic to imagine a large gambling community centered around a game like counterstrike.

when i was thinking of what to say in that post, i at first thought "but cs is a game," when i realized what ma_cherie did. but then i thought more about it and realized that there is a difference between the two; that difference is exactly what i stated above, that poker is a game designed to be gambled with, while counter-strike is not.

However, this article seems to be one of mass generalisation, I could compare playing CS to growing flowers in my garden (which I don't do because it is teh ghey might I add) because it invloves me tactically planting them then spraying with my garden hose while the neighbours shout 'ooohhhh luckshot'.

The main difference is that cs is a team game, but this article is really comparative to esports in general, which involves competition and prizes, usually cash. Therefore, esports tournaments and poker tournaments are on the same page, just different games.

Yeah Dark-Angel, it's true that you can compare virtually any two things and come up with at least a few ways that they're similar, and try to draw conclusions from it. Ideally, though, if you pick two things that are similar enough, some of your conclusions are actually meaningful. :P



I'm no expert on eSports, but the analogy to poker competitions made more sense to me than your typical comparison to other sports leagues.



It seems like different games find funding in different ways. Traditional sports are largely funded by spectators and sponsors, eSports mainly by sponsors and some by players, and poker almost exclusively by the players themselves.



So you can make valid arguments for changing the way that eSports get funded, either by going with the "more player buy-in" option, or alternatively the "wider audience for larger sponsor investment" option.



I think you'd pretty much have to have Nike logos on the players and Gatorade banners over the halls of dust2 to get any more traditional sponsors very interested, and find a dedicated spot on a network like G4.



Given the likelihood of all of that, having players invest into the cash prizes and rethinking prize distribution doesn't seem like a half-bad idea, provided your overall goal is to keep players hooked on the gambling aspect of things.



That said, I think guys like Angel Munoz are working to get the sponsor funding and larger audience to become a reality, and time will tell if that works out or not. I think eSports is large enough to handle both approaches in separate leagues, but ultimately it's up to people who care about the subject far more than I do. :)

I would rather watch CS on ESPN than the World Series of Poker.

Yeah, like many ppl have been posting, people dont buy cpus and innstall counter strike to earn money playing it, its not a investment, its fun, social and its easy to kill a couple of hours or more that rainy sunday afternoon
