Prima E-guides

If you have to prove to yourself that living in excess is awesome, then boy does the Steam Powered website have an announcement that should pique your interests! Apparently Prima is now offering e-guides for various Half-Life (tm) powered games, such as: Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, the Xbox port of Counter-Strike, and Day of Defeat.



The Half-Life 2 guide actually a very well done Counter-Strike: Source section for someone new to CS. It's probably even better in pdf format. You can (not) buy these guides right here. For the record, your gaming e-member shrank a few metric units simply by reading this news post. "Guides, pfft!"

I want the eGuide for "Coming soon: Day of Defeat Source" that hasn't been coming soon since they listed it half a year ago, haha. :)



No really though, these are cool and all, and Prima always does a good job laying stuff out. The thing is, if I'm gonna buy a game guide, I really want it to be printed so I can oggle the pages while away from my computer. I know e-guides are cheaper, but yeah. I got the Prima strategy guide for CS way back when, not for the strategies, but for the pictures, lol. :) Ah well, seeing as I'm commenting in a fansite, there's no point in trying to pretend like I'm not a fanboy.



I was amused, however, by the last page of the sample HL2 guide.

Also, Prima is notorius amoungst RPG and Action gaming sites and gamers for making guides which are fine if you already play the game tons and know it like the back of your hand, but are totally useless if you're actually new to the game (i.e. someone who might actually need a guide) as they rarely (and when they do, barely) cover the basics (this is why Authorised Collection get to make the guides for pretty much every big gaming release {e.g. the Metal Gear Solid games} and not Prima, as few game devolpers and producers trust Prima to put out something decent). Also they have a habit of trying to justify everything in a game, regardless of how pointless it is.

You're better off saving your money and just asking people stuff on forums, using GameFAQs.com, or just playing for yourself.

Can't say I'll use this too much since I've been a Half-Life and CS goon for a number of years now. Should be good stuff for beginners though.
