    "The Lost Coast" Preview

The anxiously awaited "Lost Coast" add-on level for Half-Life 2, featuring high-dynamic range lighting, will be previewed next Wednesday, March 30, on Attack of the Show on G4TechTV.
On Wednesday's show, Valve's Doug Lombardi will give an exclusive demonstration of the previously unseen "The Lost Coast," an upcoming expansion that utilizes a brand-new technology that Valve is implementing into the Source engine. Called "high-dynamic range lighting," this new technology enables a leap in lighting realism from even the current high benchmark set by Half-Life 2 and the existing Source engine.
Here is a listing of the times the show will air:
    • Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT

      Repeat Airings:

    • 3/31/05 12:00 a.m. ET

    • 3/31/05 3:00 a.m. ET

    • 3/31/05 12:00 p.m. ET

    • 4/03/05 12:00 a.m. ET

what exactly is "high-dynamic range lighting"? is this going to fix shadows going through walls/doors etc?

Attack of the Show? I already hate G4 for bastardizing The ScreenSavers into a show about video games and video cards. But did they have to subject people to browsing the internet for crap on somethingawful?

I remember when TechTV was like Slashdot. You know, without all the "OMFG FIRST POST LOL!!" and the obscure references to Cthulhu and The Hitchhiker's Guide.

To see what HDR means (it's more than just light bloom), check out this article about Far Cry's 1.3 patch. Rather than just patterns of light and shadow, the lighting becomes much more realistic. Some of the more impressive effects include your eyes adjusting to brighter or darker light and highly detailed bloom effects. It'll be very interesting to see how detailed the efffects are in HL2 as compared to Far Cry, its only real competition.

It's just a shame that Far Cry overdid it so much in terms of the HDRi bloom saturation.

Also, feel free to click on the link in the news post on the words high-dynamic range lighting to all of those asking what it is...

High dynamic range images are usally huge images. The difference between these HDRI images can have RGB channels that are higher then 255. So, each pixel have information in it.

HDRI is nothing new. It have been applied to the 3d rendering/modeling world for quite sometime. I've used it and it's a great source of light in a rendering enviroment.

You can see more info here.

They can do the same thing to CS too.

There is a "mod" for HL2 already that utilizes HDR effects.

                            Get it here.

What he said wasn't a double negative...

double negative = making a negative a positive

eg. "We don't need no education" = we need education because they are saying we don't need NO education.

                              I'm a nerd :)
