Oh, I forgot the best part: your pentium 4 3.0 running at 3.0 MHz and 'oced' to 3.6 MHz is as fast as my MSX and Sega Master System processors

no thanks.
Its religion time.
and there's nothing wrong with 40 fps. if your screen refresh is 80fps, half of that will still look smooth to the human eye. so you cant really complain. the important thing is "fun". if youre having a fun fraggin time, youre not going to look at your fps counter all the time are you?
only you should ever look at the fps counter is if youre doing diagnostics/tests. switch it off and look at the xhair instead

Placebo effect does indeed win out. The CPU could be working less, but since I haven't really had any major problems (aside from a brief week long period there), I haven't noticed any increase in smoothness or FPS from a gameplay standpoint.
Probably all in the mind.
It has reduced the CPU usage on a number of items in game though compared to their older values, mainly the new character animations.Comment

I get about 70 to 100 fps (lower in huge firefigts and the like, but never below 40 fps) running all highest setting, including AA and AF, at 1280x1024. On a:
A64 3500+
1GB DDR Dual chan
GF 6600GT 128MB PCIe
ASUS A8V-E Deluxe
If my system can pull that off, then you guys with the 6800GTs should have no trouble running the game perfectly smooth with high settings.Comment

To be perfectly fair, I played CS1.6 on ~25FPS for two years or so absolutely fine, and I played Unreal Tournament at a professional level for a little over a year at 35FPS-ish. So having a low FPS isn't so bad once you get used to it. Sure it seems crap if you quickly switch between a good FPS and a bad one and whatever, but after a (frankly very short) while, once you're used to it, it's easily playable. Obviously It's nicer to have the higher FPS, but it's not that big a deal with you can't get a solid 200000FPS miniumum.
And for the ones that think 40 fps is enough...
Launch your CS. Load a map (lan) that you know you can achieve 100fps on.
1) Set your fps_max to 40. Walk.
2) Set your fps_max to 60. Walk.
See the diference? Shut up!
Not to mention most monitors won't show more then 80FPS or so anyway.Comment

I run CS Source on a GF2 Ultra.
Granted it looks like CS 1.6 but with ragdoll effects now :) My proc is an XP 2500, with a gig of ram.
And I turn off visual quality stuff, and go for fps. 640*480 (was 800*600 till the laast update), bilinear, no shadows, everyting else set to low or off.
And after all that, it's like playing CS 1.6 ... lolComment

LOL.....I never said more isn't better. I merely said it certainly plays smoothly enough to stay perched at the top of the leaderboard. If it lagged too much to play, I'd upgrade my video card. But as long as I can still kill all of you "I must have 100 FPS at least or it sucks and I'm gonna' flame Valve" peeps, I'm cool.
