I have the same exact system, barton 2500+, 512 ram, 9800 pro. CSS runs fine for me in 1024x768 med settings. Not as fast as it SHOULD run for sure, but you shouldnt whine about it.

The really bizarre thing though is that upgrading from a gf3 TI to a 9800 pro, I experienced barely any performance increase. I guess CPU is the culprit here.

      A 1.8ghz P4(YES, P4 not XP), 512MB, and a GeForce FX5200 ran HL2 and CS:S on HIGH at 800x600, I upgraded to a 6600GT(a little faster than a 9800pro) and now I can play it at 1024x768 WITH 4X AA.

If you're having severe problems running the game, it's you and not the game.

              Glad for the update.

Yeah, for me Source in general doesn't seem to run as well as I might expect, but it doesn't run badly either. I think part of the problem is that we got used to sitting with the FPS never dipping below 100 in CS1.6 and now we don't know what to do when we see it drop into the 60s. :)

That said, CPU performance seems to be a huge factor... adjusting settings has almost no impact on performance for me... it's like my video card (6600GT) can handle everything thrown at it just fine, but the CPU isn't gonna go any faster. Such is the downside of having a slow processor (2600+XP).

I don't think you can use the word "heimlich maneuver" anymore.

I heard from someone that since that Heimlich guy died or something, you can't use that name anymore. You can use other words like abdominal thrust.
Yep I can attest to the fact that the maneuver is somehow copyrighted as a friend who recently took CPR from Red Cross notified me of this change.

Geez....Some of you are complaining because you can't get higher than 50 FPS. And some of you say your computer was top of the line 4 years ago.

Here's a newsflash folks. First, computers are really only meant to last 3 years before it's outdated and needs a upgrade. If gaming companies were to continue to make games work on peoples 4 year old systems, we'd never get new technologies. They'd have to "dumb down" whatever it is they create....because YOU don't think you should ever upgrade. I've been in the computer business for 8 years now and after 3 years, it's time to get a new CPU and video card. If it's 4 years old, you're probably still using PC133 memory too. Let it go.

My video card is very middle of the road. I average 45 FPS and I have very fluid movement in CS:S and usually am at the top of the server at the end of a map whipping the hell out of you 90 FPS peeps. This update DID free up some of the choke issues. Good job Valve.

Oh yeah, there must be something wrong with my system. All of you guys with a 1.8GHz Celeron and a FX5200 (what a crappy card... cmon) are running CS:S at 1024x768 with 4XAA and 8XAF 'smoooooooooth'...

Smooth for me is 85+ fps ALL THE TIME, and there is nothing you can do to have constant or at least 85 fps bottom limit all the time.

Sure, my A64@3800 with the Oced GF6600GT can run the game with the highest settings, 1024+4xAA+8xAF, but I play CS:S for the gameplay, not the visuals.

So I cannot play with all the eyecandy turned on, sure, the water on Aztec looks amazing, but if Terrorists are rushing all together and my FPS drop to 40 or something like that, what's the point?

I run CS:S with worst graphic quality and at 800x600 just because these firefight moments. For me it's not acceptable to play an online FPS game at less than 85 frames per second.

You stupid guys out there got the point now?

Believe it or not, I run CS:S very nicely with a GeForce 4 Ti-4200 64MB card. Occasionally I'll get a 30-40 FPS drop but I have an average of 90-120FPS and my settings aren't all the way low. I haven't even touched the settings I don't believe. I'm running CS:S at 1024x768 resolution. Other hardware:

                      P4 2.8Ghz

                      512MB RAM

                      Nothing special...A stock computer.

I bet half of you are retards with your pc crammed full of shit.

Get Hitman Pro to remove all spyware and get a decent AV program. Remove any crappy programs (aswell as awful DL programs such as Limewire etc). Remove any stuff on startup that you don't need - check how many processes are running before you play CS, should definately be under 40. Defrag your HDD. I bet alot of you will get alot better performance just by doing this.

Tweaking Windows is as important as tweaking your CS. I turn off all those retarded programs in the system tray before playing too. No Kazaa, no AntiVirus, no SpySweeper, no MSN or anything.

Oh my God that's so funny.

First you mention your temp. 20C. So what?

Next, you say we better learn to manage our pc.

Then... you say we cannot blame valve because source is their first engine and it gonna suck for some time.

Next I can only advise you to shut your mouth up.

Oh, I forgot the best part: your pentium 4 3.0 running at 3.0 MHz and 'oced' to 3.6 MHz is as fast as my MSX and Sega Master System processors, that run at 3.58MHz. Maybe your HT and 32Bit chip (and 128bit memory interface) is a little bit faster...
