CAL Changes

The Cyberathlete Amateur League announced several changes for their Counter-Strike division:

1. Teams will be allowed to compete in both the Source division and one of the CS 1.6 divisions.



2. This season will be the final season of CS 1.6 for the Invite division. At the end of this season, CS 1.6 Invite will be converted to CS: Source Invite.



3. The current CS Invite teams will be given the first opportunity to participate in the new CS: Source Invite division being launched April 2005.

As you can see, this will be the last and final season of the CAL Counter-Strike 1.6 season. With the CPL's decision to replace Counter-Strike 1.6 in favor of Counter-Strike: Source for their upcoming tournament in summer, and announcements from various CAL-invite professional teams acknowledging the change, it seems 1.6 is gradually diminishing in the invite level. cal I wont be source until april 2005, id hope theyd they able to get an update out by then..but then again..ya never know.

We already had 1 of those CS:S updates, the release of de_prodigy.. We also had several smaller bugfixing updates already, which is Valve's 1st priority I bet, fixing the bugs etc.. New content and other stuff like VAC(2), more player models, and more maps etc will follow soon I think.. Valve is probably enjoying the holidays like we all are atm, so we probably see updates continue next week, just be patient.. Also don't forget the old CS wasn't built in a day aswell.. CS is a never ending story with updates and new content etc.. I like to call it evolution..



CS will live on for a very long time unless another online FPS game comes along that's better and/or becomes more popular.. I also think that people that stay behind in CS 1.6 will have to make a choice eventually, quit playing CS altogether because CS 1.6 really is getting to old etc, or give up their fear or whatever objections they have with change and go with the flow and go play the latest version of CS like the rest of us.. I gave CS:S about a year to get bigger in player numbers then CS 1.6, but seeing the current player numbers where it's already at 50% of CS 1.6 it might be even sooner.. Especially all these big tournaments and league's switching will speed up the change in the community.. Because where the "pro's" go, the wanna-be's go, and the rest of the community will follow eventually.. CS 1.6 will still be played in 1-2 years time, but it will be a minority of the overall CS community I predict..

Already did 5 years ago.. The bitching with every CS version change is nothing new..



This time the bitching will be a bit more and last longer though, because CS:S requires buying a new game and/or getting better hardware, that's all..



And nobody is forcing anyone to switch to Source.. I don't think Valve will shut down their 'back catalog' anytime soon.. Only if you want to keep being part of the "pro" and/or competitive community you're gonna have to change this year..

Well just when I said CAL gets worse by the minute, they go and decide something great. Getting rid of 1.6 is a good thing... even if it is just the invite teams. I'm sure the skill video fans are jizzing at the idea of added physics to the ownage.

It says for invite only, that still leaves open, intermediate, main, and premiere, no? or am i misunderstanding the post CAL made?



the only reason this change happened is because current CAL-I teams were debating wether to even stay in the league since CPL went CS:S.
