If you have patience then you would of downloaded the demo and tried it out first. That's what I did. You should wait till the maddness dies down and try it out first before you buy it. You could also wait for sales... it's 40 bucks at WAL-MART on boxing day.

Today, I go to my friends.

And yes most of them play CS:S Illegally :)

And yes I got to litterally ROFL my ass on the floor because about 3 of my friends + bros and other family people got it illegal and they all bitched to me about their accounts being banned. I think valve will get into the genious book of world records for most bans on a program\system\game.

GG! Kick ass. I almsot died laughing at my friend's stupidness.

Death to Microsoft, Off with MAC, Slap the Linux to work!

What does that have in common?

Who do Windows, Mac and Linux all have in common. And No they are not all OS's, yeah I know that... Its a thing that happens that pisses off users a lot. Windows is a lot with it. Mac and Linux are a bit more uncommon!

this is the best comment anyone has posted yet. I'm so sick of the constant flame wars that erupt from angry teenagers over Valve and their decisions with their games and service...

Zips, yeah the entire cs community isn't warezing the game, but if they ban 30,000 accounts, i'm willing to bet that at least 20 000 of those ppl will be back at cs (thru warez) within days....

dont forget... ALOT of the bans were for ppl ATEMPTING to obtain HL2 illegally with other legal games on their accounts..

i gurantree that valve is doing this for the sole purpose of money making... b/c most of the ppl who had legal stuff on their accounts will prolly end of buying it again... $$$$

so, basically.. do i lose sleep over some kid downloading HL2 and playing a great game that they would never have bought anyways? No.

and wheres the finess is buy a game after over a month?~

Because with that, they ban your IP and all Steam account you've got on your computer.
No, they don't. In the future, please don't make up crap.

And wait, Nighthawk, I don't really understand why you're upset about all this? Is it because of the possibility there have been people accidentally banned? I'm against the death penalty, but I'm all for this...
I don't mind people having their ability to play an warezed version of HL2 taken away. That doesn't bother me a bit. However, to go the next step and ban accounts of people who have purchased HL2 is just plain wrong. It's theft, whether you make it 'legal' with your EULA or not.

I don't think it's right for people to warez games they would otherwise buy, but how can VALVe condemn that action when they are stealing money from legitimate owners by banning their accounts.

In other words, VALVe's "I can steal from you because you stole from me, even though you came back and paid for what you stole" attitude is flat-out wrong, in my opinion. In that sense, in my eyes they've become no better than those they are punishing.

Just banned? How about legal action...
Get real -- no one among those banned has the financial resources to fund a legal battle with VALVe software, and odds are they'd end up winning regardless. Even if they didn't, what, spend tens of thousands of dollars to get your $50-90 back? America's legal system, while better than that of some countries, definitely still favors the rich over the poor. See O.J. Simpson for reference. :P

I am banned, I payed for hl2. 60 bucks. Valve are ****ing morons.
This is the kind of situation I'm talking about. Yeah, he was wrong to (at least attempt) pirate VALVe's software, but here he's since paid for that same software, but it's taken away regardless.

You can have a "he deserved it" attitude if you want, but that's calloused and immature. Those among us who have lived a little more of life and made a few more mistakes realize the virtue of compassion and forgiveness, especially after restitution (i.e. paying for the game).

You obviously put in the illegal key they were checking for. You sir, are the moron.
Zips, I like you, but your attitude on this matter has and still does disgust me. It's self-righteous and condemning, and nobody likes that kind of attitude. Life, contrary to what you seem to believe, is not black and white.
                      kerosine99 wrote..

                      2. Every pirated copy means that Valve gets less money. In the end, all this does is hurt their next product. If no one pays for games, newer and better games simply can't be made. I paid for HL2 because I want to support Valve not only for the job they've done so far with HL2, but for the products they will release in the future.
This is the oldest point in the piracy argument. Is piracy theft if there is no financial loss? I.e., whether said pirate wouldn't have paid for the product offered had there been no method of he or she obtaining it for free.

Honestly, I think there are both kinds, and they're usually impossible to tell apart. Does piracy in general hurt software companies? Absolutely. Does every instance of piracy result in financial loss? No. Honestly, though, you can't tell the two apart, and most people who would pay otherwise claim they wouldn't.

I can understand the try before you buy mentality, but sadly it sometimes requires patience (such as in the case of the HL2 demo), something gamers are not renowned for. Ultimately, though, it's like a movie in the theatre. If the trailer looks good and your friends say it's cool, you go. You don't get to watch the whole thing before you decide whether to pay, and game software is the same way.

It's the people who enjoy the game and play online without shelling out money who irk me. I just find it shame that people who enjoy Valve's games refuse to support Valve.
I agree. If something is enjoyable enough that it has replayability value, even if you are a supporter of warez, I think you can agree that you should be paying at that point. Claiming "it's buggy crap" as justification for not paying, but then continuing to play anyway, is hypocritical bullshit.

There were and still are reports of wrongful bans set on customers who have legally obtained Half-Life 2 (aka coughed up the $50-$90 to Valve).

                          Nighthawk-

If I were to walk into a movie theatre without paying, watch a movie, and then walk up to the manager and give him 8 bucks afterwards while saying, "That was a great movie, sorry for not paying before," I'd be kicked out of the theatre and never let back in. It's common practice.

You say the attitude of "Serves them right for stealing in the first place." is immature and spiteful. I say the attitude of "They payed for it in the end, they should be allowed to keep their accounts," is illogical, and in practice, simply stupid.

the thing is, ppl who got it illegaly can still play, some ppl that bought it cant, how is that supposed to stop ppl from dling it illegaly? the msg valve is saying is "if u ever dl illegaly one of our game, u better not buy it after, or we'll fuck u up, but were not doing anything to ppl who dl it illegaly" the only thing banning account does is hurting real customer, theres really no reason to buy the game when u dled it illegaly, but some ppl did it, to give money to valve, thats a nice thx from valve to ban their account :O
