Half-Life 2: GOTY Shipping to Retail Stores

Valve has just announced that the Game of the Year edition of Half-Life 2 has just started to be shipped to North American retail stores.
Valve Corporation today announced that Half-Life® 2: Game of the Year has started shipping to retail outlets in North America. Half-Life 2: Game of the Year is a special edition release of the best-selling and critically acclaimed title that includes Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, plus Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Half-Life: Source. Half-Life 2: Game of the Year will begin shipping to other territories worldwide in the coming weeks.
It appears as though the GOTY edition will retail for $50.

The content in this package appears to be the exact same of the Half Life 2 collectors edition minus the t-shirt and strategy book. DOD should really be in this package.

There is a technical reason behind this release: this box is being distributed by Electronic Arts, Valve's new publisher.

The original Half-Life 2 release seems like the exact same thing, sans Half-Life Source. And the prices are pretty much the same thing, too.

Now, if they came up with a version of Half-Life 2 that didn't need to be authenticated via Steam...

Because that will be in a seperate retail package together with CS:S..

How is this ripping off people???

Like rizzuh already said, this is just a new HL2 retail package published by EA, and is for people that didn't buy HL2 yet, not for the people that already own it.. Pretty dumb to think that indeed..

Why? So you and/or your friends can pirate the game more easily? Obviously you have access to internet, so I really don't see any reason why you want to have the Steam online authentication removed other then what I just said.. Besides that, it only needs to be authenticated once, after that you can play offline as long as you want..

Wait when did HL2 get GOTY? And from whom, anyway? Is there like a GOTY organization, making sure that a single game gets GOTY status and others don't? Whaaat?

You know if Playboy.com gives you their "Game of the Year" stamp, it carries authority!

But yeah, dunno why this is at all controversial for some of you... just an irrelevant read and forget tidbit for most of us.

lol dod source should have been in the collectors edition, not just the steam only available ones, it was free back then, it shud be with the most expensive retail package... instead of "steam only"... but i doubt that will ever change, and i can't see that many people getting another steam account just to play dod source because you can't get it once you have retail copy on your steam...
