Totally apples and oranges. The government isn't the manufacturer of the car, and the people aren't being handed the keys by the dealer. If Valve actually provided the cracked version, it would be analogous to someone pulling up to your house in their car, handing you the keys, walking away, and then later suing you because you drove his car. You didn't have to pay for it, and you have automatic authentication (keys) so you can drive it. By them providing the product and the means to operate it without you circumventing the protection, it's legally shaky ground to try to retaliate against you for taking them up on their offer.



But anyway, like I already said, I think this is all silly speculation and the whole thing is a ruse. A ruse that will hopefully earn the developers some more bucks for their hard work.

the person can park the car in their driveway, hand them the keys and walk away, and as long as they say "dont drive it" the person isnt allowed to drive it.



Valve can provide a game, crack it, and still say "dont use the crack" and you would have to follow the license.

Whether Valve created the cracked version or is merely aware of the cracked version and is trying to take harsh steps to stop it isn't the issue here. The issue is they spent a fortune creating this game and need to recoup it and then show a handsome profit so that they can continue with a sequel and also keep working on CS:Source and DoD.

So if you appeciate their work, pay them for it.

Yes, someone will crack it, if not now, later. So what? Doesn't mean you have to get it. There is a old saying...Locked doors keep honest people honest. It's true too. A real crook isn't deterred by a locked door. If they want in bad enough, they will succeed in most cases. A lock just keeps out the opportunists.

After playing CS for years and watched Valve continually support the game with new maps, cheat detection and whatnot, I had no problem supporting them by purchasing CZ when it finally came out. Same with HL2 and I feel like it was a good investment. This is easily the best shooter I ever played and I enjoyed Far Cry, Call of Duty and yes, even Doom3..(for a while anyway).

Ignore any cracked versions. Pay them for their work. Now that the Source engine exists, Valve can get to work on HL3 and we won't have to wait as long because they don't have to build a engine first this time.

So... You have to authenticate your install through steam to play the single player game? What about people who dont have the internet? :-\

People who's computer doesn't even have rudimentary internet access probably has a computer that won't run the game anyway.

If there are small percentages of exceptions to that, I'm sure Valve is very sorry.
