In the long run, the "mouse trap" version of Half-Life 2 is not going to work. Sooner or later, "little mice" are going to find a way to get the "cheese" without getting "trapped". I bet someone's just going to make a crack for their special version of Half-Life 2, and Valve is just facilitating for the illegal spread of the game.

dont you have to register a steam account with atleast a half life 1 cd key?
no, then how would people that just got half life 2 but not the original would play? What about the accounts that only run the HLDS or SDS?

There's not a game out there that's single player that can't be cracked. It's logic, look at Quake III Arena.

If they did release the Warez version, then have they officially given people who download it permission to use it as a legal release, and therefore should take no action against those who use it?

its no different than Vancouver (B.C.) using bait cars...

they are cars that are put into places where cars are often stolen...and are equiped with gps, auto/remote shutdowns and more... people who steal them go to jail...

just because the gov. put them out, doesnt make them legal to steal.

Remember Bram Cohen? The creator of Bittorrent did a tour of duty at Valve not too long ago; I'm wondering what kind fo yummy tools they have now to catch bittorrent users.

sorry to burst you noob bubble, but here are the facts why that claim is bogus:

                        1. Deleting of steam accounts.

Registering steam accounts is free. Warez monkeys activate the game under an account that was registered in 30 seconds ago and has no games in it. Therefore banning that account serves no purpose at all.

                        2. Banning users by IP addresses.

Most people have dynamic IPs. Banning an IP serves no purpose because it can be changed easily. Not to mention if a dynamic IP gets banned after a hacker tries activating with it, and then it goes back into the pool and gets assinged to a legit user, the legit user will be banned.

                        3. Banning by subnet

Ever seen DSL ISPs that have dynamic pools consisting of a number of class C subnets or even a class B subnet? Class C means 1.1.1.* and class B means 1.1.*.* Im sure you've seen ppl that have x.x.45.113 one day and x.x.98.55 the next day as their IP. What you going to do, ban x.x.*.*? You'll be banning alot of legit users, not to mention the fact that a warez monkey will likely find a way to bypass your ban in 3 days, while the pissed off legit users will raise a sh1tstorm on your support forums for months to come.

Also, we have the fact that steam servers were overloaded, unable to auth even legit users. So I'm not sure where they'd get the extra resources to deal with identifying and logging warez users. They had their hands full with legit users.

The start of this rumor was posted here:

                        http://halflife2.filefront.com/news/Hal...on_Info;13907

It originally had comments enabled. After that URL got posted on isonews, pirates stormed it and laughed at the noobs making up crazy claims, so the all the comments were deleted and commenting disabled.

The point of this post is simple: just because its posted on the internet, it's not necessarily true. You noobs have to stop and think for a second if doing that is technologically possible, before believing it.

I think that doesn't help much because usually steamgame-warez are made non-steam.

How do you track downloads on a P2P network?

Pay the creator to do it for you!

steam is so flawed, people can just put in a fake cd key and get hl2 and cs source for free.
