If your PC does not have a DVD drive you obviously have an outdated PC and should not play HL2

EMMM, NOT QUITE, I HAVE A RESONABLY HIGH SPEC COMP, BUT I DIDNT PUT A DVD DRIVE IN COZ I WATCH DVDS ON MY SPECIFIC DVD PLAYER ON THE TV, NOT A PC. WHY THE F**K ELSE WOULD I WANT A DVD DRIVE IN MY PC, IVE GOT A PERFECTLY GOOD DVD PLAYER PLUGED INTO MY WIDESCREEEN TV.

i dont have a dvd drive fitted atm either but this is true. games are getting pretty fooking big. ut2004 was on dvd aswell i think.

Yeah, I'm a bit annoyed that I apparently can't get the silver version in stores (I like VALVe's games and all, but do I really need posters?), but odds are that's the way I'll have to go. HL:S has looked pretty unimpressive from the screenshots posted here, but they admittedly did say that their whole team had agreed that they didn't want to change the original content.



I'd agree with that decision from a geometry standpoint, but higher resolution textures and/or displacement maps would have done wonders for the look. Heck, Doom 3 is still fairly low poly, but it's a classic illustration of how much you can layer on top of that.



As far as DOD:S goes, I haven't seen screenshots yet, but that's the main reason I'd get something above the basic version. If you buy the retail version, are you able to buy DOD:S separately over Steam for a small additional fee (like $15 extra or something) or would you pretty much have to pay all over again for the silver package?

Well, HL2 comes to mind. :P



But no, realistically, we're getting to the point where more games are going to be released on DVD. Just like the 30-disk set of floppies to install Windows 95 was eventually done away with, eventually you're gonna need to move on with the times. DVD-RW drives are getting cheaper as are the discs... possibly consider a better drive for backing up files?



Worst case scenario, if you just want to fight the power, find a friend who has the game on CDs I guess.

r@ven, you can buy HL2 (the cd version) off of a website or off of eBay and there are tons of sellers that have it in the US as a CD version that will ship to the UK
