SourceDC.com Opens

Yet another website providing information about development on the Source engine has opened. At the moment, SourceDC has a mapping section with a good number of tutorials, guides, and files for your map development pleasure. The site also has sections for programming and forums dedicated to modding but neither is very populated at the moment.



Hopefully we'll see the site develop into a very helpful resource for modders in the future. And since you know you're just sitting around twitching waiting for HL2's release, go ahead and give the site a click or two.

Why do none of the servers that are starting to show new maps not set to allow downloads?



For that matter, why have I never seen a CS:S server that allowed map downloads?

Valve hasn't enabled it yet. Last I remember they were working on it so it would download the next map in the rotation before the actual map change.

Why does that scare me? Maybe I'm thinking about a server lagging to shit just before map changes or admins (as they often do) not following the rotation, and changing maps themselves... I really don't see how this is all that beneficial.

If they can figure out how to do it without encountering the problems you mentioned (though I don't think they would have announced the feature if it wasn't feasable) I think it would be extremely beneficial. Custom maps would be more common since I know, at least personally, if I get sent to a map download in between map changes, I'm just going to leave the server. If it automatically got the map before the map change I'd likely stick around.
