Well I wouldn't go as far as that, however it is a bit wrong to have CS as the 'official' multiplayer, considering imo there are better mods available. I know this is a CS site and all that, however technologically and from a fun point of view, DOD and NS are better mods. NS still isn't even on steam yet. Why is that?
By making Counter-Strike source the official Half-Life 2 multiplayer, Valve is smacking all the fans of other Half-Life mods.Comment

this must be the first game that has a complete different game in multiplayer than in single player....if the most popular game was HL Rally (i know its crap - i just said if) would they have created a HL2 Rally as HL2's mulitplayer?
this reminds me, just a small btw, Germany almost banned CS a couple of years ago....if they did ban cs, they would have to ban the selling of Half-life 2 ^_^Comment

Okay yeah, so back at E3 they DID say something about CSS being HL2's multiplayer, but I didn't know that it was confirmed (like for sure - for sure).
Somebody did say that most of us are disappointed with this because CSS really has nothing to do with Half-Life 2. I agree. But the reason they did this is because Counter-Strike is uber popular and shit, and makes up a majority of the Half-Life community. I agree. But mod teams and create a Half-Life 2 DM mod. I agree, yet again. But the initial, or the "real" product is reall what matters (to me at least).Comment

ok i dont know if i'm off with this, but no one else seemed to mention it. I'm a pcgamer subscriber, and typically i recieve my issues about 3 weeks before they month theyre for... (got the doom3 issue on like august 12th... september issue) now because of a payment issue i didnt and wont recieve the october issue that i should already have, and i was told i would recieve the november issue no later than november 1st (but most likely much sooner)
now correct me if i'm wrong, but that cover picture says december 2004 plain as day, that would insinuate that subscribers would recieve this issue around november 15-20th, well past the hl2 release (god hopefully)
so please if i'm completely off with this let me know. now i do realize that this is stated for UK release on october 5th, but are you telling me the u.s. has to wait until december to read a post release review?
ty that is allComment

ugh, I'm very disappointed by this news. Not only will the entire product of HL2 be tainted as a whole because of its lack of an official (i.e. game-based) multiplayer, but this news also is a slap in the face of the modding community that Valve says it supports so much. A mod that was once treated equally to all other mods in the HL community has suddenly gotten FORCED on people who buy HL2. At least with HL we get the option of not playing CS if we don't want to.
But now, in the weeks following release, we'll have to play CS. Because no other mods will have come out; again, favoritism to CS by giving the coders the SDK long months before other modders can get it. In fact, is the SDK publicly available at all?
As a gamer who really dislikes playing CS's current unbalanced, exploited, luck-based, and whiney-13-yr-olds state, I find it frustrating that I'll have to put up with the same problems with HL2... but this time, having no other multiplayer options.
CS:S is probably HL2's official multiplayer because Valve needed to push HL2 out the door fast enough.Comment

Ok, I don't mean to trade in doublespeak, but I think the editor's words are being twisted. Here, let me get everyone's blood boiling:
CS:S is NOT Halflife 2 Multiplayer. (and dammit, it's not CS2 either, but that's a separate argument).
This was not said by Valve at E3, nor was it Chuck's intention to say so either (in my opinion). He simply meant to state the following:
CS:S is the only muiltiplayer application being INITIALLY distributed with HL2.
There, that sounds much better, doesn't it? :) Now, for those of you who don't grab the distinction, I'll try to be more blunt: AT NO POINT HAS VALVE SAID THAT CS:S IS THE OFFICIAL MULTIPLAYER FOR HL2. Never. No, not at E3. Try to find the quote. They didn't.
Why is it the only mp component? Well, put yourself into the mind of a project manager or marketing drone at Valve trying to make a tight schedule.
"We could put a mp component for hl2dm in this, but it would further delay the project. We need to get this out the door yesterday," the project manager says.
"Well, let's just give them CS:S with the initial release. That should keep them busy, since it's still the most played mod for HL1 out there. We can add our other official mods, like tfc and dod, later. Until then, the modding community will cover for us," replied the marketing guy.
(Did I just make a marketing manager sound smart? Somebody shoot me...)
Anyhow, put your pants back on, this isn't any official endorsement of CS. It's just a popularity contest on a tight timeline.Comment
M if there is a desire for it, since all the code for hl2 weapons/player models/physics will all probably be in the sdk
