preloading hl2 = long hours, especially on their band width... i'd rather buy it from a store, its faster with reserved slot. so, soon as its in stores they will call me and i'll go down there and get it.

best thing about buying it from stores instead of downloading it, is if your computer dies and ya need to reinstall steam, you wont have to redownload all the games. -- just a thought --

No. preload is a great way to defer congestion -- from then until now. Even as we speak people are being told the servers are too busy to preload and to try again later. You're daft if you think preload is going to lessen congestion on release in any perceivable way.
Wait, so how does bringing congestion forward from then until now not lessen congestion on release?

Ok, so I was lucky to be able to get HL2 in the first hour. Others weren't so lucky, I grant you that. Does it matter, as long as they get the game before anyone's actually able to play it? The whole idea of preload is to make it unnecessary for the servers to have to cater for everybody at the same time...

ummm... you have to install .net just to get the freakin program to work or else it will give you an error every time you try to run it. noob.
look, you x-japan fanboy, i was just trying to help the guy out.

all i said was gcfscape was written to run under .net (ref: "it was written that way") and thus needs it to function. what can i compare this too? um...MFC libraries? used for some programs.

not yet, wait for the full game to be preloaded, im sure theres a bunch of crackers drooling over the challenge of unlocking hl2/css.

Well, luckily there is something called backup, and dvd drives come cheap today so a nice dvd-rw should take care of that.

Also, yes, the hl2 gcf is hopefully encrypted so unless someone has access to unlimited cpu power, there is no possible way to get to the content through the gcf before the release. And even so, valve might have encryption/decryption algorythms that they won't release until hl2 goes gold so it would theoretically be impossible to crack.

its not as encrypted as you may think, many people have already examined the contents and extracted files.

Perhaps for you, and for those who endured the preload congestion, the release will be a bit less painful. For the people who don't or can't preload, the release congestion will still be outrageous. And depending on the amount of data the preloadeds will need to finalize release, combined with the already inadequate server bandwidth for those downloading the entire thing, congestion will inevitably still be a problem.

I'm just arguing for argument's sake, though. I'm gonna buy the box regardless.

Hey, I didn't read through all the posts so I'm sorry if someone mentioned this but just try to get anything you extract from those GCF files and you will be a scripting god, they encrypted the hell out of everything down to the 100kb .wav files so if you happen to get any of it working, First, I dont believe you, and Second, email it to me at dul_phang@yahoo.com :-P
