I hate to be a downer, but wouldn't be so Valve to release a 2 gig file of crap just to make it look like they had HL2 ready?

it's not crap, it's all (or most) of the textures for half-life 2. if you would like to play half-life 2 with no textures, be my guest.

In the link accompanying the update, Erik said there would be preloads over the next couple of weeks, which leads me to think that HL2 will be released in september, not november..?

I don't really see the point of (buying) games online, it takes a long time and you don't have a room full of boxes
its just not the same without the boxes!!!

I get the same error mentioned earlier about not being able to map the gcf to memory.

I can though open all the other GCFs in the folder successfully.
install .net for gcfscape to work since it was written that way.

I'm confused, the quote in the news post says that...

"those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be authenticated and ready to start playing."

...which suggests that this preload contains the full game.

But I'm sure I've heard elsewhere that this preload is just textures and sounds.

Start at the beginning of the sentence. "The moment the game is made available..."

You're right that this update is only textures and sounds and such. What they mean is that when they do send the complete game people who preload over steam will be able to play as soon as they "flip the switch" so to speak, instead of having to go down to the store to pick up a copy. I believe this partial preload is simply a means of reducing the size of the final preload in order to spare bandwidth.

I have; I wonder if SP2 broke it. Like I said, I can open up any other GCF including the one for CS:S Beta.

ummm... you have to install .net just to get the freakin program to work or else it will give you an error every time you try to run it. noob.

I highly doubt that considering the fact that neither i nor my cousin have sp2(as it sucks the royal fat balls) and neither of us can open it either. If I remember correctly Valve stated the .gcf file was ENCRYPTED. Do you people not know what encrypted means? I'm sure there are ways to get around it and I've also read posts regarding people who have opened it using GCFScape. But, after all this ranting and raving the fact is. IT'S POINTLESS.
