    New Version of HL Informer

A new version of HL Informer has been released. HL Informer is a small application designed to sit quietly in the background, and keep an eye on your favorite Half-Life based servers. As soon as one of your friends joins the server, Informer plays a user defined sound to let you know.

HL Informer is a free download from Squib Software and boasts a good variety of features.[break="list of features"]
    • automatic scanning of servers, at customisable intervals.

    • discreetly informs you when your friends are playing.

    • user defined sound for each player, so you know who is playing without even having to have access to the desktop.

    • built in snapshot feature, for getting screen grabs at the touch of a button (not just from within hl based games)

    • view basic information about the server, without the need for a external server browser.

    • join your friends in a game at the click of the mouse.

    • most actions can be logged, either temporally in the program, or permanently to a external log file.

    • automatically checks to ensure you have the very latest version.

    • can automatically disable itself when connecting to a server, and even change the status of microsoft's messenger - no more getting pestered mid-game.

Doesn't Friends do all that for you? I know Friends is down sometimes, but other than the MSN-related features, is there anything really special about this?

Friends can be tricky sometimes when entering and exiting games. I've seen it not log in automatically sometimes, other times it'll log me in automatically. Sometimes it doesn't always work right at all. Just another alternative to quickly join up with some buddies in a game if trying to paste or type IP's into the console is a pain (which it sometimes is if you can't remember it correctly).

Sometimes when I have someone playing on my LAN we both join the same server and neither of us can see each other on friends. It shows as offline. Signing out then back in doesnt fix it, and it doesnt happen consistently.

Works fine for me. Been using the program for best part of six months now.

Only problem ive had so far is not being able to connect to servers via Informer - which turns out to be a result of a Steam update (interested to know if this was intentional or a bug). Even that seems to have been sorted with this new version.
