The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) and its CAL online counterpart have both undergone a massive CS match format change that comes in the shadow of the Justin Blanchard's appointment as CPL Commissioner. Both the CPL and CAL are adopting a maxrounds 15 format, but are shortening the round timer significantly:
Though maxrounds 15 has been popular in Europe, the CPL's adoption of the format will make it an implicit standard. While the number of rounds per half has increased, the theoretical maximum time for a half to be completed has actually decreased. The CPL is trying to speed up competitive Counter-Strike play through these changes.[break="read about more match format changes"]Overtime play has been completely revamped, removing the focus on pistol strategy when two teams tie in two halves of play:
These changes will take affect at the start of CAL's upcoming season — which will likely be pay-to-play — but new configs are already available. The changes will then be used in the most competitive of environments during this Winter's CPL event, which begins on December 15th. The CPL released this statement regarding the changes.

Justin Blanchard believes that these changes will move the game play to a structure similar to NFL football. Rounds with lots of action followed by a regrouping strategy period, then another play with lots of action. Overtime changes should provide teams an opportunity to utilize their full gamut of strategy instead of just one round determining play for the remainder of overtime. These changes mark a massive overhaul of US league play. I think that Justin has made some exciting changes that will shape the future in major ways. Over-all, competitive CS play just became a whole lot more dependent on big weaponry and the strategies that go along with them.
