    GF Scopes CS:S

Esports website Got Frag has taken a look at the CS: Source BETA. Although maybe just another in a series of articles that look at the new version of Counter-Strike that will distributed with Half-Life 2, this article is interesting because it is the first real look at Counter-Strike: Source from a competitive angle.
After some solid time playing Source, we're optimistic. Many of the changes implemented, though via the source engine, drastically improve the feel of the game. Overall, the pace is a bit faster than 1.6 thanks to the improved run speed, minimal fall walking delay and improved AWP. We can't wait until the 18th, when more serious players will be online and we can see how Source stacks up in a competitive environment.

Most Counter-Strike players, cynical as ever, expected Source to be the nail in the coffin for Counter-Strike as a skill game. Exactly the opposite, it feels very polished, and the mood is optimistic about the forthcoming release of our favorite game. While many changes are worthless eye candy to those who play seriously, the improved graphics and game play presentation will assist Counter-Strike in becoming more spectator friendly.
You can read the rest of the preview right here. I'm quite surprised that this Got Frag article gives a thumbs up to CS: Source, as the competitive community has a history of resisting change.

Update: Jess Cliffe has posted in our comments, correcting a few tidbits contained in the article. Jess says that the run speed has not changed at all and that only the rate of fire has changed for the M249 PARA.

i never really noticed the player being pushed back while knocking over a barrel in the half-life 2 movies, like in cs:s. hopefully they change that, it's the only thing i don't like with the physics.

Actually, the run speed is exactly the same. The code is the same and we have physically timed it to be sure.

"Additionally, due to the netcode/recoil/crosshair changes, the para is much more useful."

Only the rate of fire was increased on the para.

Good job Cliffe, I've been waiting years for just such a change....

BTW, thanks for using the stainless steel slide on the HK45 USP... It looks way better and its cool to use in game since thats the style I own. Is anyone else itching to use the pumpshotty??? "Think BIG deagle." Wow what a great niche for the shotguns...Awsome!

I play competitively but I'm glad wallshooting is nearly gone. It's annoying to be killed by a person who can't aim at all, but knows where common spam points are, and after using almost all of his ammo on different spots, he finally hears you go "ugh" through the wall and unloads. I hope glass can still be shot through before it's broken, though. Also glad that nade-splash-through-walls has been fixed/removed.

People are posting on Gotfrag that they can still bunny hop, I'm assuming they just mean they can keep jumping quickly with no delay. Hopefully that will be fixed.

Cliffe, the shield is still a spawnable (is that a word?) entity in game, though you can't use it.. is there any reason why it was left in?

                          Whiner.

Edit: I might as well constribute something worthwhile---I LOVE the new radar. Colored dots that are ACTUALLY visible... wow...

I hope they keep the same jumping delay as it is. Or at least not make it any longer.

What the hell is wrong with you?

It is not just jumping without delay and there is no reason to remove it.
