    Yahn Bernier Interview

Sogamed has conducted an elaborate interview with Yahn Bernier, Valve Software's network and demo coder. Questions relating to moviemaking, demos, and even Half-Life 2 have been dicussed.
Is the ability to record demos an important aspect of the game to Valve? Or is it just a feature that you are glad to have, but not excactly a priority to update and maintain?

I think this is more important now than it was for HL. We do see things like HLTV and ongoing moviemaking work as important areas for us to invest in. Inside the company we've used it most for recording trade show demos, but again, I think that'll change with HL2 where we've got a much richer toolset for doing in-engine moviemaking.
Whether you are a moviemaker, HL2 fan, or just plain bored, give this interview a thorough read.

has anyone tried to record a demo with CS:S yet, if you have then you will notice you dont really need to zip them anymore

i recorded a small demo of about 45secs

        1.6 size = 4-5Mb

        1.7 (CS:S) = 340Kb

I was bored AND interested :E

Currently, demo recording and playback is limited and a little buggy. Hope that HL2's is better.

Hrmm, that sounds cool. Maybe the models and ingame stuff will promote HL2 and CS:S more than it did in HL and other stuff. MOvie makers of companies that do stuff like this in game for video's can use these ablities to their fullest potention? Will be very cool to see, ahhh, good models that look like people. No more crappy MODELS and movies that have those crappy models

The interviewer is a moron. There, I said it.
First, I'm wondering how many discs HL2 will be? There was a picture of a HL2 package with 5 HL2 CDs +1 CS:S disc. Is it true that it will be 6 CDs? (if so, can a "full install" be done?)
He's obviously too stupid to know that the picture of the 6 CD's was a fake. Just like the identical Doom 3 one (all of the CD's were in the same place, as was the box etc.

                  Interesting read, nonetheless.

                    Umm, there's no way a 1.6 demo is 4-5MB for 45 seconds.

Valve doesn't use GMT time. :P

Even if they did, the pre-loading of Counter-Strike: Source is on the 16th, you get to play on the 18th.

in Seattle they use Pacific time (PST) which is GMT-8, so it is 2 in the morning at this time. I would say you can wait between 7 and 16 hours before preloading begins. And as said before, preloading has really no effect on you (aside from psychological), as you can't play it till wednesday.
