    CS: Source vs CS Networks

Valve's Gabe Newell stopped by the Half-Life 2 Fallout forums the other day delivering detailed information on the netcode for CS: Source. His post addresses some of the concerns people have had about the impact the new physics would have on player lag.
I measured the bandwidth demands for GoldSrc & Source with 16 bots on de_dust. This should be realistic since bots generate the same network traffic as human players do. I used a network monitor to get the exact traffic data for a process. Unfortunatly the tool doesn't include the UDP header size, so I had to add 0.55 kB/sec to all results. The resulting bandwidth per client is:

    GoldSrc : 2.72 kB/sec

    Source : 2.85 kB/sec

This is pretty good since we added quite a few physics entities in de_dust. I made an extra testrun where I disabled physics in Source and got 2.48 kB/sec.

      network settings: rate 10000; cl_updaterate 20; cl_cmdrate 30
Note the shite rates that were used.

Those are default settings. Settings a majority of CS players use.

Because most CS players are shite and don't even know that "settings" exist.

Actually those rates are fine for a 56ker. If you have a crap connection you have to use crap rates. Valve can't magically make a dialup connection low latency and high bandwidth now can they?

I hope in the generation of games after source they start phasing out multiplayer gaming optimized for 56kers. Dialup users are kind of holding everyone back, especially in the MMO scene which could really take off into new areas outside the slower item hunting level gaining formula of most of the current mmorpgs.

56K doesn't lag if you have "minrate 0" as your CVAR...

                      56k latency is > 100ms

                      56k bandwidth < 56kbps

                      that's laggy enough for me

At the end of the day, we'll all complain about lag and bad reg and people having 'dodgy rate' etc. So whatever results they come up with aren't going to change anything.

Ya'll know that UT had, and always will have, the best net code ever
