I dont mind realy, because I'm on 56k and dont have cs:cz yet. Have to wait for my b-day to get it. But if I get it, and this happens I'm going to be soo mad. Hopefully by the 9th this would all be cleared up because I might be getting DSL and when I want to play and I cant...I garuntee you will hear from me!(Also MSN is ripping me off with $21.94/month,where I can get some Sprint DSL for $25/month!!!)Comment

I don't know if anyone can correct me, but so far we still don't know who is behind these attacks (I haven't seen Valve say anything about the sources yet), and especially not why. If they're doing it for a reason, it's not going to help without an understanding of what it is.
That said, with every DDoS attack, Valve presumably take more measures to stop the same happening in the future, either by more filtering or extra conditions built into the servers.
I just want to know who and why.Comment

It was stated by someone here in comments previous (During the first wave of major DDoS attacks) that they knew those who were DDoSing the servers. He explained (as best he could for being a jackass) they were attacking the servers because Valve was taking down WON and they were upset because they still play Homeworld on WON.
I just want to know who and why.
Their words, not mine. I contacted Cliffe about it and that was basically it since there really wasn't anything else to go on (not sure if he ever looked into this one site I linked him to however, though the content there may be better suited for the legal dept at Valve). Nevermind how it's not really Valve taking down Half-Life's WON servers, it's Sierra who actually owns the servers last I knew. And nevermind how the Half-Life servers going down have nothing to do with Homeworld.
There was also someone I talked to at the steampowered.com boards who said they sent in info to Taylor Sherman after talking to some kid on IRC who claims he was directly responsible for the DDoS attacks. The reason he gave was also because of WON.
So... There's no clearcut "who" as people could be lieing or it could be more than one person. The "why" however seems to be quite clear. Kids can't accept a change for the better, and abandon their security blanket (WON). And the only reason people have problems with Steam is because their hardware/software isn't configured properly (routers, program conflicts, general idiotic use of the PC, etc). They also enjoy placing blame on Valve/Steam for when the service goes down despite it being out of Valve's control.
Also, as a side note, people also enjoy bitching about Friends. Now Friends is a nice bonus, but it's not a necessity to play. It was never really there in WON (Unless you count the ad spammed chat rooms). If Friends isn't up you can still play your games. Just use another of the MANY IM programs out there people. Friends being down is not a reason to hate Steam.Comment

I ignored that comment for exactly the reason you described.

But you gotta admit... when they were playing on WON for years... it ended up being a trustworthy service. I know some people who could play 1.5 fine w/out any problems but once they were forced to update, Steam started giving them problems. It's hard not to hate it when you cant play your beloved cs. The system is a bit more picky than WON, but it ends up taking the cake imho.Comment

I don't hate steam because of friendslist. I love steam because of friendslist. I just wish that is was more stable and actually worked. It makes it easy to find clanmates friends and the server they are on without copying and pasting.(I am lazy) I just wish that it would refesh on its own, be faster about showing when friends leave joina new server. Thats all. Just make it work like it did when steam first came out. I don't know what happened to make the list not refresh like it should but whatever change they made, they should change it back.

When it first came out, it was limited to beta testers (myself being one) and some people that got the leaked copy. There are a lot more people now, I doubt they changed much of the programming for Friends in that time, although they NEED to. With more people on the network, it needs to be fixed so that it does update when people leave servers, etc.
