Just before 1.5 Valve bought the WON servers that they use, those are the ones that are being shutdown, all other WON games will still work because they arent being shutdown, only the ones that Valve owns

I don't believe these servers are actually operated by WON, but are ran by Speakeasy. They may be called WON servers just to reference to the fact that they are the old authentication servers. I could be wrong, but I believe that this won't affect any games aside from the Half-Life family.

Ok, here a little detail. Yes SpeakEasy has been running WON server, if I remember right, who knows been too many years with HL, got to love SpeakEasy, but I guess life goes on I still don't like Steam, but I will have to live, and will have to figure out a way for LAN, hrf. WON is just the old auth servers, but still they were the download update servers also, those good old time if anyone rememebers

Hmm... try to make sure you were not running 1.5 in software mode, since that is the default. Here are the ways you can tell if you were running software mode...

1) You noticed a big visual difference when playing 1.6

D3D, blows for CS... It wasn't supported back when who knows what ever lol... Well I don't know, but I run in my own mode, called ATI X800 video card mode :-P haha. I win...
