Im can;t wait for my AMD Athlon 64bit 3200.
I have used both AMD processors and Intel. My first AMD was an athlon 2000 (1.3ghz i beileve) It ran great, then my brother gave me his intel that he got from his collage for 50 bucks. And it was a P4 2.66ghz. Now the P4 ran hella fast with playing games but seeing the price for a P4. The AMD is a way better buy because of their price and the prformance you get out them.Comment

I still love my Linux :) I run Linux 24/7, don't touch windows unless I have to :-P Been a Linux user for a long time. I just use WINE and then I compile Windows Programs from a Windows computer, and then covert them over to Linux, and I like Linux because when windows is running uses more of the CPU speed than need, so my AMD chips when Linux is running on them it doesn't get it speed sucked up with useless crap with Windows :) BUt this about CPU, so I just saying Linux is a better operating system for servers because long time uptime, I been running a linux box for the past 8 months and hasn't rebooted and its a 800MHZ AMD CPU :) So I think AMD wins longest support for a processor, because I did it with a 1.8Ghz CPU Intel (Couldn't find any 800Mhz chips lol, and didn't want to spend the money on it anyway :-P) And did hte samething, and the Intel didn't last as long, heated up and cooled heated and then shut down after about 3 months, but I think AMD is great for server work, but if you want uber hardcore power and don't have the money for a 64 bit AMD, then go with a nice 2.8Ghz or higher Intel. Another thing with Intel, there middle chips that were the Prescott is your an Overclocker, and want a chip that is already running hot and easy to control its heat and still be able to overclock without problems, I suggest check out the Prescott chips. I love my 2.8GHz Prescott, runs great. But Power to AMD and Linux, Linux supports full 64 bit MUHAHAHA, OWNZ0R WINDOWS!!!

I've always run AMD processors myself, simply due to the price difference for the upper-level (but not top of the line) processors. However, I do wish most AMD systems wouldn't be so annoyingly picky about the RAM you use. Intel systems seem to fare better in those regards.
Anyway, at the moment, the Athlon 64 3400+ remains the fastest CPU for gaming (aside from overclocking), but it's a spendy processor. I'm interested to see what the future will look like with dual-core processors and all that business.
On the question of the P4 3.0 GHz question, in most cases you're going to be looking at a Athlon XP 2800+ as being comparable in performance, but it's a rough estimate, and depends on what test you're throwing at it. Pretty soon I'm guessing neither Intel nor AMD are going to advertise the GHz of their processors directly, but stick with model numbers, as the complexity of the processor is starting to affect performance more than sheer clock speed does.Comment

hrmmm, yes its kidda like the AMD 64 bit processors, they have a core bus speed of 1600Mhz, which is sweet, and they use the model number, but on sites like www.newegg.com they aleast tell you the speed freq then run at, such as an example a 3400+ AMD 64 bit runs at 2.20Ghz, which so far is the top speed for AMD I think, correct me if I wrong. But yeah I like the Ghz, more fun to read
More power to AMD, I say shut down Intel and let AMD run the world, and shut down Microsoft and let Linux run the world also, AMD and Linux = Most powerful combination MUHAHAHAHA.

modern CPUs divide the internal clockspeed up anyways, so all this 3ghz crap youre seeing in big letters on their advertisements is not entirely accurate. its accurate for legal reasons ofcourse. but the CPU divides the clock into a more manageable speed. 3ghz is a really high frequency thats hard to handle especially in small circuits. why make life complicated.SubNeoN wrote..

Nope, I like hosting and running computers... Also my extra computers are used at LAN that I host and play at.... I rent them out also, thanks, for saying :) And I don't give a shit about DSP, its not what were talking about, and this ins't spose to be, lets flame about other peoples thing... I say just going to say I like AMD more over intel, thankz... O yeah and hte 84Ghz system, thats called cluster a computers. I can get up to 35+Ghz out of my 15 computers cluster together, its not hard.... So that really doesn't do much, but cluster isn't too effecent in that all computer have to install and run the samething, and its a pain to setup and maintain :)Comment

Linux... have you ever clustered all your computers together like that? What app did you run that supported the NoW setup? For reference, SETI@home does not count. :P Moving on...
Digital Sound Processors are highly specific circuitry and tend to be massively parallel in design. The end result is that, while the rated GigaFLOPS ("billion floating-point operations per second" for the non-techies among us) for a DSP may be much higher than for a given CPU, it's an apples to oranges comparison.
It's like trying to compare RISC to CISC... sure, one may do more operations for second, but none of those operations are as complex as the other. Sure, you can get more FLOPS from the DSP, but then again, you can get far more FLOPS from your GPU than you can from a CPU. Doesn't mean that your GPU is going to handle the varied tasks that your CPU needs to be able to complete.
So yeah, I agree that GHz rating isn't everything, but talking about DSP's and making age insults is not the way to make that point. :)Comment
