WON Closing This Month

The archaic but popular authentication system for Half-Life servers, WON, will be shut down by the end of the month according to the new greet message received when connecting to a WON-auth'd server. The message reads:

PLEASE NOTE: WON authentication servers will be phased out by the end of the month. In order to update to CS 1.6, please download Steam at http://www.steampowered.com immediately.

It looks like even the most stubborn will have to rejoin the living; I hear CS 1.5 works on Steam! Thanks for the heads up le gritche.

I guess people with 56k are used to wait very long when downloading etc, so will not be gutted.. I'm very lucky never had to use dial-up.. When I went online in 1996 there was already 1500/256 cable available overhere, I'm on 8192/1024 ADSL now.. Kindof spoiled.. :P



About WON going down.. I say it's about time, brings a split-up community together again.. I see no point in playing CS 1.5 on Steam if that's possible, CS 1.6 is better in many ways (bugfixes, radar, crosshair etc etc etc).. Welcome to the Steam community.. :)
