    FPS Tweaking Guide

Reddy and praXis from Say What Again completed their FPS guide whose aim is to "get the best out of your machine". Details of tweaking your video card, hard drive, and much more to gain that extra 5 FPS can be read throughout this elaborate guide.
There are two reasons myself and praXis have set out to make this guide. i can't understand why people with such high spec machines cannot manage 100 fps in counterstrike, it boggles the mind. The other reason is that people just accept that their machine is running at the highest possible speed it can manage.. which 9 times out of 10 is actually wrong.
If you are in need of a slight FPS boost of sorts, do not forget to check out this guide.

The 9800 Pro is pretty weak where OpenGL games are concerned... As are all ATI cards. :\

steam kills no matter what really... somehow i think valve is using my machine to process an equation that will put the world on its heels whenever i play a game....

my thoughts exactly, even with nothing running, with radeon 9600 xt 128 card with all settings on high performance i get shit fps, even at 800x600.

I have a 1.7 p4 w/ 512 ram. it's starting to get me mad so i just put it all on high settings and it plays the same and it looks fine.

Just my 2 cents about what they say about Nvidia Drivers for best performance in CS.

NVIDIA Drivers v44.03 are truly the fastest drivers for GF2, 3 and 4 (I dunno for GF5 and GF6 because I never had one). In CS I gain ~10-15fps compared to newer drivers. Note that these drivers are only good FOR counter-strike because newer drivers give me better fps in RECENT games.

Good guide for people who really havent used msconfig or done any tweaking before. I reccomend it to everyone though, you never know what little bits of information you might have missed along the way. It's good to look over things like this.

ps - STEAM = Destroyer of all bandwidth and fps. period.

I have never had fps problems I max out at 100 constantly and the lowest I go is 70 when there is mass people and smoke and stuff. I run a p4 2.53 with 1gb of pc800 rdram, and a 9700 pro vid card slightly overclocked with latest catylst drivers(which just came out yesterday).

That is the more poorly written guide in the history of the internet.

The information is good, but damn; that is the most god awful layout and grammer/spelling I have ever seen. That BIOS guide there is going to screw a lot of idiots over, n00bs that don't know the possible problems are going to open up their BIOS settings screen and go "Wee! Look at all the cool options!" They will then proceed to change every damned thing in there, reboot to a blank screen, call tech support, and get hung up on the second they say they followed third-party documentation.

How did that thing get to be a news item?

my 9700 pro + latest CAT's seems to do the biz ok :)

that is apart from aztec - I can loose 15 - 20fps in parts of that map (we're not talkin smoke either)!
