The best servers bar none right now are GriffinRuns. If you are serious about playing CS, that is the server for you.

Every PHXX.net public server I've played at has had ping spikes, loss, choke and no hit registration. Chalk it up to the fact they use inferior comps and pack like 5 pubs onto a single machine.

Please have some idea how to run a server before you complain about how they run theirs. First off, I complain about their performance based on several peoples opinions and knowledge I have gained. "Shot registration" is more often than not an excuse for you missing easy shots. Because when I do play on a PHXX server and it is at a good time, it registers just fine. The poor performance time is what bothers me, I believe there should never be a time for poor performance in a server. However, PHXX is at least being honest and admitting the problem and trying to fix it. Several other companies would just try to tell you to fix your rates and claim their servers are fine. Anyway, my advice to you is try backing off of the LAN rates from servers running on low ticrates or far locations, and also brush up on your aim and stop using it as an excuse for missing.

isnt it obvious why 90% run their servers at 100fps or below? why bog down a process with so much CPU time, when you can cram as many server processes in one machine to save $$money$$. isnt that what being a business is being about? getting quick returns? with game servers its always a compromise between quality and how long the server host can keep up this "good quality" in terms of high bandwidth usage (for low pings) and less processes per machine (again for low pings and smooth gameplay). sooner or later the game host will realise theyre losing too much money and drop down to provide an "average" service. rather than the outstanding one before. ive noticed this with many servers, when they first appear, they let clients download from them at a staggering 10kb/s when in game. after a few months, it drops to a very average 3-4kb/s. and then u notice more and more servers packed into a single IP address..

              shame really.

actually Pharlap, your post shows how little you actually know about server side fps and hlds in general. Companies don't choose to run their servers at a certain fps. Whether you have a physical box with 1 instance running, or 10 instances, you won't see a difference in server side fps. There are no direct options concerning your goal of fps, mostly it's because of a default OS limit.

As for a single IP address, I don't see what difference it makes to you, it's a misleading way to judge how many instances are running on a server, it's very easy to run multiple instances from different IP's on the same hardware.

I suggest you look more into what you are talking about, before you make these blatant accusations once more.

server fps is also very easy to manipulate, this is something that can be easily spoofed, I wouldn't trust your 1000 constant fps, orion (although at least I can see you have much more understanding of how hlds works compared to some other posters here).

                  Orion,

As you are probably aware, poor performance stems from a multiple of factors. 1/2 are client, 1/2 are server side. Obviously we have little control on the client side.

We do on occasion have server side performance issues. We may have underestimated the load on a box. Their may be a hardware issue. The issue may be a network issue with one of our peers or downstream providers. (We have a very good relationship with our NOC in terms of communicating with them the research we do on downstream providers. ).

We get complains. However, running just over 300 sessions of counter-strike, we have an overabundance of compliments on service and performance. However, as is always true in life.. it's that one bad experience that stands out greater then all of the good experiences.

As I mentioned before, we are looking to (as we always are) offer a new service that is (albeit more expensive) streamlined and optimized for the clans that are very serious about their performance.

For those of you complaining about not having 10,000,000,000,000 FPS.. get over it. Valve ships the software at a standard FPS setting that sits around 66FPS. For every person that installs a booster app, ups tycrates, etc. Be-aware. There IS a side-affect. The netcode was written with the general populace in mind, not the DSL user sitting 10 miles from the server.

We've been running servers for about 6 years now as a 'group' and 3 years as a company. We understand operating systems, file system management, network management (we run, design and build international data centers as well!). We are gamers. I always welcome intelligent conversations! http://forums.phxx.net/showtopic.asp?topic=72 -- post there or email me shane@phxx.net

thanks for your judgement of me. i bet u feel superior to me. thing is, i know what im talking about. furthermore i dont give a shit how much you or anyone else thinks i "dont know". i know what i know. i have run servers before on connections that have unlimited bandwidth and on those with limited bandwidth.

edit: btw, i havnt mentioned any technicalities in my post, i was speaking from the point of view of a hosting company and how they structure their 'buisness model'.

10 trillion ? a thousand is more than enough. you might call it unecessary or "having side effects", fact of the matter is, ping boosters work. thats all the proof we need. no "hunches" pls.

                      Pharlap,

Your initial response was directed at coldfusion. Free society, bla bla - say what he wants and you can reply.

Your response to my post: 10gazillion - was obviously a blatant exageration for humorful purposes. I never called it "unecessary" however, I did say it had side affects. This is not a hunch. Review the documentation on the netcode and review what the booster code does. If the booster code was "perfect" with no "side affects" then why didn't Valve simply do that in the beginning? Or perhaps once a sufficient number of the population is on broadband?

Netcode is optimized to balance out HPB with LPB (to a matter of degree). Booster code vanquishes it. It makes for excellent game play among LPB.. but got forgive your gameplay if you have 100ms pings to a server.

                        aah.

there are many servers out there that have "high ping kickers". at first i thought that these were to get rid of "lagging players" that supposedly lag the server. of course i understand that dialup users load a server much less. but then i thought, maybe the high ping kicker was to filter out certain people geographically? since theres an obvious ~100ms gap between east US and Europe, and about 150ms between Japan and West USA. or could it be because players with higher pings tend to have "bendy bullets", as explained by the guy who wrote the HL netcode. personally i always thought that kicking someone just for having a high ping is a bit "unfair". kinda like not picking the black guy for your soccer squad. but more often than not, high ping (just geographically high, but stable) does NOT equal "laggy" player, whose dowloading kiddie porn or whatever.

You have run servers an unmetered bandwidth connections? Taking into account how much one pays for quality bandwidth these days, I'd love to ask what datacenter (if at all) this was at.

Second, yes - LPB kick HPB because even WITH the netcode optimized as it is for such play, too much of a different in ping makes for obvious effects. On the other hand, I think a LOT of it is some sort of "ego" to have all LPB on a server. I am guilty of such as well.
