    Yeah for memory leak plugs, its like taking pilled to stop diaria . No just kidding. But anywho, fun stuff on the frontier of Steam and its updates. It seems like there is now atleast 1-2 weekly updates, but I believe thats all in good stuff that they are keeping up to date with all their software and games.

    On the topic of the skin, I don't think its a world of hurt to most people and its so much easy to skin with which is nice for dumb lazy people like me that it would take maybe a week to pull out and make a skin.

    Good stuff Valve, keep it up.

                      Welcome to the world of business and covering one's bases.

                      When you own something that people want badly, you get to make all the rules. Whenever you find yourself in that situation, it would be foolish to not take advantage of it and immunize yourself from potential lawsuits should the worst ever take place.

                      That's just ensuring some hope of future financial survival, though spreading viruses to all of your clients would more or less destroy your corporate reputation.

                      On a side-note, while I'm sure this would never happen, would they still not be found liable if they were to intentionally spread viruses to people who were illegally using their software (either via piracy or just cheating) or would the foul-play intent of that nullify this agreement? Not curious for people's opinions on that, more just on if someone has taken some courses in law or something or can remember a case that sets precedence with these types of matters...

                      As far as the other, more interesting changes, some minor but good additions here. The more options given to 3rd party developers, the better in my book. Anybody know when we're gonna start seeing icons for 3rd party mods, or is there a way of setting them up yourself? I know the functionality part of it was added pretty recently...

                      Unrelated, but NS 3.1 comes out tomorrow... :) When the option to right-click and update 3rd party mods is implemented (if ever) I'll be in ease-of-use heaven.

                        this allows them to defer cases of negligance, not gross negligance or even criminal negligance. That means, if the steam system is attacked, and they have all nessisary firewalls and such security in place, but it still gets through and infects in turn YOUR computer through steam.. they arnt responsable. However, they cannot disclaim responsability if they purposly send you viruses OR even if they are infected and dont have proper reasonable security in place.

                          Whats that steam:://connect/ ?

                          btw, of course they do EVERYTHING they can to stop viruses.

                          It would only hurt em really bad if something like that happened.

                          ...so you dont have to worrry about a new conspiracy

                            Yeah, there's a limit to exculpatory clauses in license agreements. Someone on Slashdot was discussing this the other day with regards to Sony's DRM Rootkit and quoted their law professor, "If clauses like this worked, we'd all be driving around with signs on our cars: 'Not responsible for damages if I cause a wreck.'" Apparently, the courts have historically taken the consumer's side for the most part, mainly due to an exculpatory clause being far too broad and overarching.

                            Valve's added clause doesn't appear broad or vague, though -- it appears to be directed solely toward the quality of service provided by Steam servers. They don't have control of the Internet between their servers and you, they don't always have control over continuous supply of electrical power to their servers, they don't have control over your local LAN and someone on it sniffing your account/password and stealing it, someone on your local LAN masquerading as a Steam Server to implant viruses on your computer etc. etc. There's just a ton of variables at play, and they can't possibly be fiscally responsible for all the potential consequences. (And they probably shouldn't be!) The client-server user experience with Steam is heavily reliant upon the Steam servers being up and no computer hackers making life miserable, and they're ensuring that customers realize and accept this going forward (or at least click on the button that says they do).

                              doesn't this mean you can use other programs to connect to steam when it isn't on?

                              aka, activate it and connect to the server, such as in old 1.5, for example ASE

                                Thanks Scanner, that was a pretty good explanation and clears things up a bit.

                                As far as the steam protocol goes, try it in Internet Explorer or something... I'm guessing it enables webpages to give hotlinks to servers, but I haven't tested it out yet (and can't from this work computer).
