    Legal Action Taken Against Cheaters

Although this story has been reported elsewhere, CS-Nation has been waiting for an "official" confirmation that action was being taken. Over at the Half-Life 2 Fallout forums, Gabe Newell (Valve big shot) has posted just that:
We've started taking legal action against cheating (cheat-sites, cheat creators,...) both in the US and abroad. This is in addition to the on-going investments in anti-cheating technology. You'll see reports of this percolating up as various actions happens.
This is just another front in Valve's anti-cheating campaign. Back in April, Valve began a significantly more aggressive banning methodology, that came as a byproduct of a rapid series of VAC updates silently distributed to all CS servers.

i wonder if they'll win any cases, i find it hard to believe that they will, but it's possible.

Sure they can win cases. If people are hacking their software for their benefit, and others benefit that is illiegal. They can always update the subscriber agreement to say that. Or maybe not. If they banned everyone who cheats in CS, it would be like the RIAA suing people who dl music, or maybe even worse than that. Its very possible though that they can take legal action aganst cheat makers and sites that distribute them.

Well if virus writers and hackers can get arrested for malicious code, wouldnt surprise me if they go after crackers and cheatdevelopers.

Also from a well known cheatsite:

            Dear Users,

as we are in conflict with Valve Corporation about the content of the sites of our client: the programmer team, we ask you to help us to pay legal advice.

            We thank you very much!

            Sincerely, Hosting

I somehow doubt if it's going to get anywhere, but at least they're trying and it should scare off some hackers.

Cheats violate the software's EULA, so therefore Valve has legal standing to sue for contract violations. I say, more power to them, the less hacks, the better.

Great! Now how about a VAC update sometime this month! It's been well over a month since last VAC update (unless they are not telling us when they do it now.)

They have to prove that the user agreed to the EULA, first. Writing a hack is very different from using a hack.

                            That's probably the case.
