AMX Mod X Website Back Up

After a long period of downtime the AMX Mod X website has reopened.

AMX Mod X is a Metamod plugin that provides in-game administration tools, game statistics, server management and gameplay modifications. More info can be found at the AMX Mod X Website.

Olo seams to have moved on. Although he never said so, but he hasn't posted on the AMX forum in over a year and a half. The last Steam update broke AMX working on listen servers. While it still works great on dedicated servers, it's not looking like AMX will be developed anymore.

The poll on the psychostats website shows that it's used almost as much as AMXx and Adminmod combined though. Not bad for a stale project.

I don't like these mods, they are killing cs. or just making it more interesting for ut/quake fans and sadistic admins.

agreed, not to mention slowing down servers.

i hope valve will lock down all server operations for HL2 to stop crap like amx/adminmod/metamod etc from ever being created for it.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Valve has already stated to certain developers of 3rd party "mod" projects and server side alteration camps that they will be supporting them and will be in touch very soon.

There are many uses for AMXX and MM (Though, AMXX no longer requires nor needs MetaMod, etc.) and if you had done your research, you know that it's now a multi-threaded project running JIT, etc.

Not to mention, coming from a business standpoint on this second note, it's the clients choice what to run and what not to run, given it doesn't adversely affect other clients on the same machine.

And before you think it, AMXX even now (0.16) has not ever once given me a problem, nor any of my clients. And this is without multi threading, JIT, a new PM module, and the lack of MetaMod.

So, Valve is going to support (as it has stated in the past and just recently in a contact) "admin" modification projects and AMXX (as it will soon stand in a rank of its own) is not nearly the "grueling resource hog" you think it may be. It's quite the opposite.

How do I know this? Because I have about 56 servers deployed right now on the HLDS side of things that all have AMXX installed, with about 20-30 clients daily activating or de-activating it and not a one has complained about "lag" or "slowdown", etc. In fact, I've been told numerous times that my servers "Hit better" and "ping better" and "Feel better" than any GD anytime anywhere. So to say that one company is better than the other because they do or do not run AMXX is ludicrous and unfounded. If you find your services are "slowing down" simply because you DO run those things, then it may be time to invest your time and money elsewhere. And if you can't decipher what I'm trying to say, it's that you seem to be implying that any GD server is awesome because it's not running these mods , etc. or that you could if you got one of theirs, etc. but it'd be stupid. Case in point, AMXX dos not adversely affect your server performance.

Overcrowding and lack of extra bandwidth/processes to SUPPORT some of these minor functions, does!

just going on the assumptions that the server "feels better" and "pings better" is wrong. u need to show some stats graphs to see exactly how much resoources these mods are taking up. and they will take up quite a bit. you dont get something for nothing.

for server clusters who want to maximise their HLDS processes/machine ratio, installing 3rd party CPU using mods is not a wise decision.

why have a lot of servers running at 25-50 fps? when u can have a few that run at 100fps. and im talking about a full server inthe middle of a battle.

sure warcraft3 mod may be fun. i love it. but u need the hardware to support it.

In response, it is not I who is stating that my servers "feel better"... and this is with and without AMXX. I'm being told by my clients, most who are former GD clients, that my server feels and plays and "registers" much better, regardless of what is running. Not to mention, they ping better. This is to no discredit of any company, but rather it was jsut a simple supporting factor in my rebuttle to the falsehoods surrounding AMXX and how "much" resources it uses : read hardly any.

And, 64FPS is not possible (rathr anything higher) unless you disable ACPI, etc. and use a higher ticrate. To further support this, we have nothing but (currently) two 2.8F xeons with a minimum of registered 2GB DDR, SCSI raid 1//1. So, as long as our bandidth supports it, the 10 servers we run per machine , even full, hardly gets touched resource wise. This is based off of 16 player "pubs" and a mix of 12 player "privates".

Also, with ACPI enable, which is necessary under Win32 if you desire having a duakl channel IDE/SCSI set up, we've still got all the servers (HLDS) running at 64fps constant. Average BW u/d is about 3.8 - 4.6mbps /per month

On linux, it's a bit different of course, but it has also been shown that the advantages of linux versus a Win32/64 platform is practically null, as HLDS is fairly outdatd and to this day barely pushes anything OS wise, seeing as linux wasn't even around at the time of the netcode, not to mention the linux HLDS_L is still udnergoing heavy maintenance. HLDS deployment is solely dependant on taste of choice and hardware versus how many you want up at once. Your OS Won't have much of an affect on anything, espcially if you run Windows 2000 Server or Datacenter (the cmd line version of Win32/64) with very little overhead, etc. and the same can be said for linux/unix/sun.

And, if you do it right, you CAN get somthing for "nothing", as nearly all the time one of my machines in question here is running full load at 58-70% CPU usage, on one affinity. If I use multi-threaded projects.. .the effect is barely even noticeable.

Exactly why I buy ncg servers. I agree that as long a server is not lacking bandwidth and/or CPU power, server-side add ons (such as admin-mod, amx mod, psycho stats, wc3 mod, etc.) do not diminish the style or quality of play (or at least to a noticeable extent?). It all depends on the hardware/usage of the server.

Server-side mods are great, in my opinion. Sure, I avoid WC3 servers like the plague, but I don't mind the fact that they're there. FF plugins help moderate servers when admins can't be around, stats plugins allow stat whores to have their fun, and there's something simply satisfying about TK punishment plugins. :)

I figure, as long as servers with extensive mods (WC3, etc) are clearly marked, and servers with more minor mods (stats, audio announce) have options to turn most or all of these effects off for your local machine, then there's no harm in having server-side plugins.
