I always do my screenies in de_aztec in the main hall, where it's all nice and bright, and there is no color shading. To be honest however, you usually won't find yourself wide in the open sitting like that (or at least you shouldn't if you want to live )

You know how few people I meet anymore have played foption? It's almost as rare as people who played docks or es_ maps. I mean, heck, I know a bunch of people who have never played siege, as sad as that is.

its terrible. i started playing at beta 7.0 and at least the stock maps were played just as enthusiastically as the "popular" ones. what went wrong with the community up until now? did valve fail to promote other maps? what if dust was retextured to something like foption, would it still be the same popular map?

ive never really liked dust or aztec because i felt that these maps didnt capture the essence of CS. i mean its blowing up crates in a desert or some stones in an aztec "national park". they always felt like DM arenas to me. but the other maps captured the tension of rescuing unknown hostages or escorting a frail VIP through a minefield of Ts perfectly. thats what got me hooked onto CS. well that was the essence of CS then, now this is now, and i think dust maps fit the style of CS play now just fine and dandy. since CS has become just a DM frag fest (at least on public servers), so maps like backalley, thunder, rotterdam, docks, tundra..etc...dont really have a place. perhaps just to please the fetishist for old maps.

I can't help but think rotterdam would have been at least slightly more popular had it been done in daylight, instead of being as dark as it is.

Oilrig is my favorite map, but Highrise is the map with the greatest Counter-Terrorist feel to it, in my opinion.

But yeah, when you think about it, it's not surprising that maps with simple maps like dust/2 with low learning curves and clear conflict areas are as popular as they are. Ah well, I guess we can't spend all our time remembering the past...

rotterdam (while not looking anything like rotterdam in real life) is perfect dark (no pun intended). how can anyone who takes CS seriously and plays it for the "thrill and excitement" dislike dark and atmospheric maps? sure a bright map like aztec is good because u can see enemys better, but ambience adds so much.

why are people so afraid of dark maps? is it because it forces you to play slower and more defensively rather than rushing around with your awm/deagle mowing down enemies left and right? when u just run around massacring (sp?) enemies thats just normal deathmatch - mindless killing. quake3 and unreal are perfect for that. its just CS is supposed to have the intention of being, erm, slightly strategic? dark maps let u experience that.

could be interesting with CS2, if map makers can make a morning/day/dusk/night lighting cycle in the maps, would be very interesting to see how the map changes throughout the 30 min default pub map rotation. say every 15 mins the lighting goes through a complete cycle.

oilrig is a favourite of mine. im still suprised its enjoyed so heavily in pub games. maybe for the same reason assault is, its extremely 1 sided. guess theres hope yet. highrise i miss also, as well as arabstreets and a whole lot of heavily 1 sided maps.

dust2 is a great map. extremely balanced (well done MikeJ), with a mixture of bright and dark areas. dust1 is boring and extremely 1 sided. The Ts are basically given a window of a few seconds to win the map during the rushing period. if the CTs overpower them in the corridor then the Ts get slaughtered one by one very quickly. yawn.

you mention learning curves. guess that separates adults who want to experience the challenge of getting to know a good map from kiddies that just want to frag as much as possible. valve needs to try and cater for the maturer end of the user-base spectrum in future releases i think, more so than they are now doing, catering for those damn pesky kids who ruin the game for every1 with their hacking/teamkilling/voice comm abuse.
