Counter-Strike is the FUNNEST game I have EVER played, even though the graphics are way outdated. There is not one game I have ever played for three years straight and have not lost interest in. I can't believe all you people denouncing cs over warcraft and unreal tournament. WTF is wrong with you. you don't deserve to come to this site. If i was Rizzuh, I would ban you. Rocket launchers are gay. I hate everyone.

Sorry but UT should win tis one. Original Half-Life ain't that great - it's the mods for it that are great, it's the mods for it that people are still playing. How many of you can say that only yesterday you went can completed Half-Life again? Exactly.
I love tho original HL. By a large margin the best PC game I've ever played. By a small margin the best game, period, I have ever played. It's quite simply, the best. Ever. If anyone disagrees, they're wrong. Or deluded. Yeah, that's it.

I played HL not a few months ago and had just as much fun as I ever did, even though I know it by heart by now.

Half-Life really changed the first person shooter genre. Every single-player fps game is compared to Half-Life.

Just a small example. Far Cry, released last Tuesday, compared to Half-Life in the review summary: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/farcry/index.html

It shouldn't be like that though. I mean really, I don't mind CS, but original Half-Life is a joke. It's every single FPS cliché slapped together. Vents big enough for a man with 100,000lbs of weapons to crawl through, security doors that can be opened simply by pressing a big red button placed next to the door, right down to the damn crowbar. It's one big cliché with no character of it's own.

Look at Red Faction. You could blow up basically anything in that, which had hardly been seen before. It had something new.

Look at Halo. For once you didn't need a damn crowbar in an FPS game, you could just smack 'em with your gun.

Look at basically any of the FPS Bond games from Goldeneye to Nightfire, the near-random yet still useful gadgets (the x-ray specs in Nightfire will always be a useless, yet fun, 'classic' feature), fast-paced driving levels, the actually convincingly complex storyline, all stuff you rarely get in FPS games.

Or how about taking the real old FPS games like Doom, the ones that really built the genre. Sure it used endless sprites and there wasn't a 3D model to be seen, sure the sounds were repetitive and annoying, sure the level design was simplistic, but at the time it was new, at the time it was special.

Now when HalfLife came out, what did it have? Some slightly above average graphics, 'okay' voice acting with no proper lip syncing, a ton of cliché weapons and level ideas, some fairly standard enemies and a weak storyline that never expands until you actually complete the game, and even then it barely broadens out at all. A damage system just as forgiving as any other found in an FPS game, maybe even more forgiving, enemies that ranged from so easy you're literally laughing at them as they tried to swipe at you and miss to enemies so hard that you're running away in terror from them the second you even think you can hear their footsteps (ala the endless zombies in Resident Evil and the 'Nemesis' in RE3).

The point is, Half-Life wasn't that special. It had almost nothing new, if at all. It wasn't innovative. It wasn't all that great, to put it simply. It just slapped every cliché in the book together, added abit of a random factor to keep things vaguely interesting, and that was it. If I didn't know better I'd have said it was probably published by Valu-Soft.

UT's multiplayer gets old after 10 mintues, even with the over-rated vehicle mode. Plus the sounds in UT are utterly lackluster.
So you think big maps, with awesome graphics, good sound (better than CS), rag doll physics, vehicles, and it even has mic support, is not as good as CS? Wow, what are you smokin?

a joke? Half-Life was very immersive, and just plain all-out FUN.

Half-Life won, and will square off against Halo on April 1.

I don't think you understand. Half-Life invented half of those cliches.

Yes. (and cs has mic support too you dumbshit, UT just stole that from them.)

everything copied hl, thats how it became cliche-ish to u, because every other game had copied it, it was classic. it came b4 the other games, not the other way around.

And Raven Shield, Splinter Cell, etc. use the Unreal engine. Your point? We're not discussing engines, we're discussing the games.

Half-Life was a good FPS, but I wouldn't say revolutionary. Admittedly its SP was pretty good, but not in and of itself enough to make it the best FPS ever. Unreal Tournament was the same multiplayer-wise IMO. And right now UT2004>HL. But that's an unfair comparison; UT2004 is a few weeks old and HL is several years old. What about UT2004 and HL2? That's a different story... guess we'll have to wait and see...
