Ok for all you people that havn't figured out what email validation is for here you go:

It is so that you can buy games using Steam.

Many people just put in fake@email.com cause they figure valve may send them spam mail (which they don't).

So they need to validate your email so that they know that they can send a reciept there and also if you forget your password they can send it to you. Imagine if you bought CS:CZ or HL2 over steam then forgot your password and they couldn't send it to you. You would be screwed.

Anyone gets DDOS'd : Whoever did it sucks

Steam gets DDOS'd : Steam sucks

      ........logic check someone?

Why can't someone just say 'aww that sucks' without having to mention how much Steam supposedly sucks.

who the heck would DDoS Steam? If the HL2 source leak didn't piss off gamers enough like Gabe threatened, maybe more of this will....
Who would intentionally TK in a game? Who would try to be the VIP every round on an as_ map, and then commit suicide round after round? Who would try to block you into a corner until the enemy team came to kill you all? Who would peck at your health, cheat, play obnoxious sounds over and over again via voicecom, and then spray gay porn everywhere on a server?

It's not like pathetic and immature jerks are a rare occurance in the CS scene. Some kiddies just think it's oh-so-funny when they piss everyone else off, and due to it being over the internet they don't get beat for it.

I don't find it even remotely hard to believe that some of the hacker/grief play groups out there would try to do a DDoS attack on VALVe once again to try to a) piss you all off, and b) try to make Steam look bad, because they can't use it with any of their 200 fake or stolen CD keys.

In order for a DOS or DDOS attack does ONE REAL PERSON need to cause it. Also if that is true shouldnt it theoretically be traceable (although if they know what they are doing tough).

Its not normally traceable, if you are smart. You could just upload it onto the server, from the place, or some other way, and then have your IP change, and stuff. Its not hard, you can do a NAT with a router and then have the static ip, or DHCP and it will auto change the ip, thus making intracable, from what I have seen, and worked with. I don't do DDOS, or DOS attacks, but I just know how they work, and how like Gameshot911 said, couldn't it be traceable, but its hard to. So good luck Valve...

Some people are dumb enough to do it from their home machines, I'm sure, but most DDoS attacks anymore tend to come from virus-infected computers that are now under the control of someone else. Distribute a good trojan, and you could very possibly have several thousand computers or more at your disposal to use their entire bandwidth hammering one server at a time.

That's really all it takes, and we all know that time has shown how many idiots open up their virus infected attachments. If you trace it back to the infected computers, then what? It's not like most people run typical server software or have any other means of checking what computers have been connected to them.

Why does everyone hate valves? Valves keep your toilet water from coming back at you. Steam it great too - it cleans tile floors like you wouldnt believe. And it can take down wallpaper.

DOS is bad because I dont like to type crap like "cd e:\". Why would anyone want to use DOS?
