i suppose they took the email verification stuff down up until the steam network is fully back online ...
... at least that`s what i`d do if i was valve
Quick update what a forum sticky at steampowered.com says:A note about email verification!
When you get to the button that will send the verification email, just click it once. The mail won't show up right away, but it will. As you can imagine, everyone getting the update has been trying it out and - well - trying it out a lot. There's a bit of an email backlog right now.
Also you don't have to verify your email at all - you can still play without verifying it.Comment

i think the email verification is so you can play on LAN :) So instead of needing the net to verify ur email everytime u play want to play on a LAN, now you wont have to because your steam account has been verified by valve and you can play on LAN without the need of a net connection. \o/Comment

Probably once they start selling games over Steam, anything so far have been required patches, and must be downloaded so you can play, but the games they sell (HL2, CZ) won't be owned by everyone and if you buy them through Steam, they are gonna be really freaking big, so downloaded will take a while and a Pause function would almost be necessary.Comment

Oh christ, I never want to buy anything through steam. I'd rather have the boxed version!
It is meant to verify that you are indeed alive and kicking, or better, your account is valid and can be used to purchase games like CZ and HL2 ( in case you decide to add CC info later on ) through Steam.Comment
