    Steam Status

As you probably all have noticed, since the update this morning, Steam has been running pretty sluggish all day which has caused a lot of unresponsiveness and not allowing people to log in. Erik Johnson, Valve's recent new posting king, has posted on www.SteamPowered.com that by tomorrow morning, Steam should be running much better.

The reason for the sluggishness was because the content servers were overloaded; most of you knew this. "Until the Steam content servers are able to catch up with demand, some users will continue to experience slowness or unresponsiveness from the Steam client", says Erik Johnson. You can read his full post below.[break="Erik J's post"]
Since this morning's update was released, the Steam network has been overloaded, causing many Steam users to be unable to login.

Until the Steam content servers are able to catch up with demand, some users will continue to experience slowness or unresponsiveness from the Steam client. We've been making some changes to the content servers today to accelerate this recovery, and we expect conditions to improve quite a bit by tomorrow morning.

Thanks, again, for your patience after this update.

It was a lil slow, I downloaded as soon as it was released but just downloaded on other comp about 10 min ago and its back to normal speed now.

I've also been able to verify my email address, and do the hl2 survey.

        Here's a fix for a related (?) error:

When I filled out the HL2 survey, I noticed that Steam picked up my Operating System as 98. I'm using Win XP (home). Not sure how this happened, because it accurately identified my NTFS file system, but that's besides the point. I had a good laugh at Steam's expense, and continued with the install. Everything installed smoothly; no problems even with the notorious Steam Content Servers.

When I tried to run cstrike (or DoD or any other mod) after the install, however, I received the message:
Steam - Error: Failed not run game.[sic]
Then a sentence or two about having two steam versions installed (not true).

After much hair-pulling and steam-reinstalling, I found this post which gives a fix for the problem (or close to it). Simply:
» Right click on the steam.exe (located at: 'C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe')

          » Select properties

» Click on the "Compatibility" tab

» Uncheck "Run this program in compatibility mode."
That should do the trick, hope this helps someone keep their hair.

          Updated the client just fine.

Had a bit of a delay updating the individual games, but afterwords I was able to play them fine for a while until I quit.

Overall, good update. People just have to learn to be patient.

Steam is very sluggish on my computer now, downloading the security files used to take only 6-7 seconds. Now, it takes 20 seconds!

Yeah, I think the email verification is basically to make sure your email address is legit.

Somehow the system that's supposed to send these things out hasn't sent one to me yet though.... man, everything is overloaded.

Yeah, the survey deal has some issues, for sure. For me, it just decided that I run at 1152x864 instead of at 1280x960, and claimed I use D3D mode instead of OpenGL. Ah well, doesn't really matter too much, I suppose.
