Where has the mailbag been? I don't know but it's back! A while ago you probably remember the whole Cyber X Games fiasco. Well we asked the community their thoughts on the whole situation:

CGX has some explaining to do not only to the community but to its sponsers. Very large companies put thousands of dollars into this event, and not only did people not see thier name, but they are "associated" with this oranization who had a huge foul up.

I think it's time that someone releases an article about what Steam is and why Valve wants to use it. It's called Capitalism. All these people bitch and moan about how Valve should drop Steam and how they should of released an Offline version a long time ago if they were smart.



Valve is smart. Smarter than you think. They aren't going to release an Offline version of Steam until they find a way to curb piracy at the same time. That is most likely the trouble Valve is having in making an Offline version. It is also very probable that Valve won't drop Steam because the whole purpose of Steam is to cut out the middle-man, Software Publishers, in the sale of software. Valve's plan is that they will be rolling in dough after the release of HL2 and probably whatever Expansion packs they offer.



Valve has good developers, to my understanding, but their brass also have a thirst for money. Valve now wants royalties from LAN centers that offer CS, which also factors in to why there isn't a LAN version of Steam.



The only effects I see from CXG is people complaining about it and spreading rumors and lies. I doubt there is more depth to the issue than that it was a coincidence of possible errors. When the Challenger (I think) ignited on lift off. It was eventually proven that faulty O-rings caused the accident. The probability that one of these O-rings was not faulty was 99.9%. Even if one failed, the craft would still be operational. If two failed, there is a slight chance the craft won't explode. But on that day, 3 O-rings failed which is extremely unlikely but none the less possible. Chance fell on that small probability that 3 would fall and the ship exploded.

I was an admin at CXG, infact i was on the networking team, players did not have access to play outside, it was fact that yes they could see other servers but if they tried to connect they'd just sit there, the problem was we didn't have lan steam, secondly yes wiring was terrible the original people that was supposed to do the wiring really didn't have a contract to actually do it all, they had a contract to lay 20,000 feet of wiring not to lay it and terminate it. Third everything was just basically unprepared machines didn't even have games installed on them the day of the event then once they were about to start the machines didn't have proper updates for windows so blaster pretty much downed nearly every tourny system there was. Another problem was, we were told cs was to be priority over every other game out there, so that was why other games didn't run smoothly, I personally feel bad because i had the chance to step up and just tell them that cs 1.5 was looking pretty damn sexy at the time, but at that point i think the damage was done. If anyone would like to continue this conversation or if you were there and like to see who i was since out of the 6 days i was in vegas i spent a total of about 125 hours behind the admin table :-D AIM: StreamsOfSolace

and thats why they have made all these updates for this game, for free where other companies would charge and call it expansion packs. hell, valve could have released cs retail as a game like cz where u cant dl it when u have hl like you can now..

Did cs really produce the whackjobs?? or did it just attract them?

I don't thik cs is to blame for any gang violence or such. It is ignorant to say that a game did that. The people who do that stuff like violence and they play the game because of it.



Those people are also the people who usually complain "steam is gay" and claim that all their friends quit the game. "I always get illegal operations with steam" FIX UR DAMN COMPUTER, format it and see if a clean install does it. Its time to throw out the old voodoo 2 and go with a new system or upgrade from win95... maybe then u wont have the problems.



Anyway...



-I think that the CXG planners should have communicated with Valve a little more and got a lan copy for themselves.

-I also think that the reason not so many people showed up is because it wasn't advertised very well. Get the word out people, I didn't hear about it until the week it was going down.

-Why did the people bring computers that hadn't been updated yet??

Get that taken care of a week prior to the first day.

-I do admire the admins efforts, but they were too late.

I hope the lessons learned will go into next years planning and it will be flawless next time.
