Speaking from the perspective of a sane network administrator, they should have had a transparent proxy in their network. A few sites will always get a lot of hits (CNN, Steampowered, CSNation, and BluesNews to name a few), and hopefully they'd find a way to cache the Steam content servers also. With that, the update process would have been quite fast, while very little external bandwidth would have been used. If not, they could have mirrored the latest Steam files and either passed around the network share addy or just given out some CDs to be shared.

and thats why they have made all these updates for this game, for free where other companies would charge and call it expansion packs. hell, valve could have released cs retail as a game like cz where u cant dl it when u have hl like you can now..
Valve still makes patches for CS because they still support it. What do you mean by all these changes? Nothing has changed dramatically in the CS during Valve's involvement with the mod. I don't think anything has been improved or drastically changed that would warrant an expansion pack.

Valve took over CS so they could publish it as there own game and make more money off it. You can't download CS retail for free. CS retail contained training missions and the fake gun names. I don't know the details of why there is a retail and a mod version of CS.

If you haven't realized, CS 1.6 is somewhat of a beta test for Steam before it hits the prime-time with HL2 and its mods. Remember all the difficulties that occurred on the release of 1.6 and Steam. Now think if Valve didn't release Steam until the release of HL2. Depending on how Steam was implemented, it could cause ruin for HL2 even if the game itself was decent.

i think no one is to blame for this fault. Steam is new, so problems show up all the time, not only with steam but also around it, lanparty's for example...

They amde this mistake one time, and i am sure it wont happen again! Learn from your mistakes, and go on, easy eh ?

The last two letters are by the most retarded individuals on the face of this planet.

Actually, that's offensive to retards. They are worse than retards.

              Retards > Them
