    Oh Cool,

Pretty new maps that no one will play because everyone is too busy playing De_Dust and Fy_Iceworld for their great *ahem* gameplay. LOL.

I'm not mapping for a guy who can't take 2 seconds to spellcheck what he types... or a guy who has an animated gif with FIRE as his avatar.
chances are, you couldn't map in the first place

Counter strike mapping is overrated, theres just sooo many of them, and nobody plays them really.....wait......Ex that out; Counter Strike mapping is pointless. Yep, thats it, pointless.

it seems "pointless" now because every server's rotation is dustx-aztec-italy-inferno. The community has become so spread apart and discombobulated that there aren't really any "pub communities" anymore.

Back in the day you could become a regular at a given pub and meet the people there and everyone would know everyone else. The pubs ran full map rotations + custom maps when requested. It was a personal touch that has now been replaced with a twisted CAL rotation, automated server plugins for TK/voting/etc that remove the job of administrators, and a swarm of new players. The result of all this really distances the player community from the server community. I'm sure there are exceptions, but it's just a pattern i have noticed since about CS 1.3 and up.

thank you for your most helpful input to a mapping contest.
My point was simply that, if you don't even show enough professionalism to write a decent paragraph, how seriously can you expect people to take you? If the CPL was run by people who showed this lack of concern for quality and accuracy, do you think they'd get any sponsors at all?

If you want anyone to take you seriously, you have to take yourself seriously and take the time to show quality in your work. That clearly hasn't happened in this case, and the contest is just barely beginning. Not a fantastic start, in my opinion.

As far as mapping contests go in general, I think they're a great way for mappers to have fun and gain a little motivation to create stuff. In the long run, however, nearly all of the maps submitted to this contest will never be played by the time next year rolls around, if they even last that long.

I remember a CSC contest where Shogun did really well, as it was quite visually stunning. When's the last time you played that map? I know I haven't in ages, along with pretty much all of the other custom maps I've downloaded over the years. A few have done well (iceworld being a prime example), and we all know that nearly all of the official maps were once custom maps, but when's the last time a community map has been officially added to CS? Anything shy of that happening makes it very, very difficult for a map to get much playtime.

Anyway, I'm not against the contest, and I figure the contestants will have fun with it. I just don't think that much will really come of it in the end.

                Very true MikeJ... very true.

                        Hey csnations,

I wanted to say thank you for all your comments. Regardless of if there positive or negative they are all worth while. I know many of you feel that my grammar should have been better in the post I made. But to be honest I really did not think I would get much if any response out of the contest. The idea came from a couple guys chatting and I just whipped out the contest while I was sitting at my desk at work. Posted it to a few sites and bam it kinda took off. Either way I think the main thing is I still play counter-strike and there is still 30,000+ other players that do as well. Yes the market is flooded with maps. Yes my spelling sucks. But all in all it is a contest. I have 39+ entrants at this point and I personally am very excited about the whole thing growing legs of its own.

Thank you all for your input, and to those that entered Good Luck. Thank you to csnation for posting this as well.

I agree wholeheartedly with Nighthawk. It's like someone typing up their resume and printing it on the back of a screwed up envelope.

in 1.5, the rats map series was played a lot, they were a great success.

i'm in three communties that are exactly the way mikej described them as non-existent, one of them being the massive CDG community, one being my own clan, and one another dutch server. that's just the thing i love about cs: entering a server and "knowing" the people there. if what mikej sais would be true, i wouldn't be playing cs any more...

We're discussing a trend in the online community, not a hard and fast "every single server is exactly like this" or anything like that. Sure, you can sometimes find servers that have regulars, and I myself regularly visit a few servers far more often than other pubs.

That doesn't change the fact that more often than not I only see a few familiar faces (so to speak) on those servers, plugins still do most of the admin tasks, and the map rotations are fairly standard. At best you typically get some of the servers featuring at most a couple of custom maps that can be voted in, but aren't on the normal rotation.

I think this is a great idea!

This guy is willing to put $200 bucks out his own pocket. I don't see any of you stepping up to the plate.

I can't map at all but am looking forward to playing some of these new maps.

Nice to see someone out there coming up with an idea and actually following through with it.
