So if I understand correctly, his gripe is that while he has all the games he played for, he cannot give his original CD-Key and HL1 games to someone else?

I guess Valve should offer to reset keys for free, although I'm finding it very hard to give a shit.

Yeah when I ordered silver I didn't realize what the backcatalog meant, so I ended up registering it on the same steamaccount. If I had known I might have registered a new account and bought hl2silver separately, just like my brother did the other day... Oh well, too late now.

Besides my Sven Co-op bonus features are registered on my steamaccount so I wouldn't get them for Sven Co-op 2 if I bought HL2 on new account. Unless Sven would be willing to update with my new steamid which I'm sure he would do for free, cause he is such a nice guy. :)

anyway, the community isn't being forced to move. 1.6 is still supported to an extent, although anybody with any $ and a brain should already have CZ. for those of you with crap gfx, play CZ, if not, CS:S.

Okay, I'm going to have to agree with peagle on that infinity zero article. It's nothing important; he basically thought that you got the whole back catalog on top of all the games you purchased, therefore having a whole other set of CD keys. Little did he know that CD keys were just totally useless with Steam (Though he should've know that) and that they didn't give out CD keys upon purchase. I'm having a hard time trying to understand how Valve cheated some people out of their money. So what would he have done with those CD keys, give them to a friend? It seems more like a bash on valve than anything. Hardly article worthy.

Wow, it was known for a while before hand that in ordering Half-Life 2 you'd get a new ID.

It was stated that if you were banned in the 1.6 days or earlier you would be unbanned if you purchased Half-Life 2.

Put 2 and 2 together, it's not that hard to realize you'd get a new ID.

Everybody with a working brain made a new Steam account before buying the Silver or Gold package, assuming they even knew the back catalog was included. Though it would be nice if Valve hooked up people who didn't with a new "back catalog account", I don't fault them for failing to do so. It was never stated implicitly or otherwise that you were getting a new set of CD-keys to every HL-based Steam game, so nobody actually got ripped off. The alarmist tone of that article is pretty ridiculous.

I knew what the back-catalogue meant, and I still put it on the old account. I guess I just don't mind paying a little extra for HL2. I don't have a need for a 2nd Steam account anyway.
