    The CXG Story

gotFrag has posted a very helpful overview of just what has truly occured throughout the Cyber X Games tournament, and it's obvious progressive downfall. There are some interesting facts to read in this fine article, such as some volunteers who have willingly devoted his/her time, money, and energy in this tournament.
At great professional risk to himself; Craig willingly volunteered his expertise, time and efforts out of a desire to see the event succeed for the sake of the community. Additionally, the entire staff at Super Computer Inc put forth a great effort, above and beyond their obligations, pulling yet another all-nighter to make sure that the entire infrastructure was ready for the upcoming matches. Combined, these people led the tasks of creating a full bracket and schedule for the CS tournament, and rebuilding the tournament network that was setup prior to the event.
There happens to be much more to be read in this informative readthrough. Want to know the facts? If so, click right here for them.

YOu would think that such a big event with so many sponsers would be more prepared. THis isnt some small local lan tournament you know.

cxg already started off with bad mistakes, from the Lantatics poor planning and then the shooting at the cxg quali in cali. cxg has bad written all over it!

        cpl wins

they should read the steam faq before promising that $160,000 prize. many EUropean teams went to LA and didnt even play a match..

poor team9, they skipped the CPL to perform better here, and now look at their bank account. $0.

You would think that these guys would have their act together by now. HIRE SOMEONE TO ACTUALLY COORDINATE AN EVENT THAT SIZE.

Holy shit! It takes at least me and another guy to plan 100 man LAN parties here, and that's just planning - not setting up, tearing down or supporting.

What a bomb. Earlier reports had blamed Steam for some issues, but it seems like most of the failures land in CXG's corner. Which is a shame. The CPL needs good competition to either prove it's better or worse. This is damaging to the esports community. ATI and Microsoft are big names, and they were let down by CXG. They were let down by the esports community.

Agreed. I'm glad I read an unbiased article from gotfrag (thank you Midway for seeing both sides). While it's true the Steam issues didn't help the event, it has been noted that CS wasn't the only tournament cancelled (thus VALVe not volunteering their time to help out the event is irrelevent at this point). I do feel sorry to see bad press for the esports community, since the Cyber-X games had a lot of hype behind it. I also feel sorry for the volunteers who tried to salvage the event, but only to see it cancelled anyways. The only good thing I can see out of this is that they can see what mistakes to avoid next time. (Assuming they can find sponsorship after this failed event.)

Another thing....CXG has a LOT of explaining to do to its sponsers...companies that put THOUSANDS of dollars into this event...basically testing the waters. This may be a hinderance to the main-stream acceptance of e-sports.

It doesn't help that you need masses of bandwidth to play steam on lan, if they made it possible to play cs 1.6 without connecting to the internet, then maybe this event could have happened. But as everyone else has been saying its not completely steam's fault. CXG setting up the night before and the day of the event is retarded. These things should be up and ready to go the day before the event starts, so as to get that out the way and fix any minor problems that people may find.

i thought they did that at CPL? LAN version of steam or just their own steam content delivery server

                    this is sort of sad:

The Steam issue did not help out the event, and it might be true that they do need to update their software so it is more LAN friendly, Valve shouldn't even be mentioned as a factor to why the event was cancelled. A 3MB patch is not going screw up the ENTIRE Counter-Strike tournament. Maybe it will pause it while eveyone updates, but by no means should it screw up a 1200 CXG CS Tournament, when you consider that everyone has to restart Steam to get patch ... Restarting Steam = Not in a game of Counter Strike = can't screw up anyones game (Valve has plenty of servers to seed the update). So what should CXG done? They didn't do enough in my opinion. Start by making an announcement to update and delay the tournament while everyone updates. Don't have enough LAN cable??? It is a $100,000 huge tournament! Go out and buy some with the emergency funds they most surely had. Instead they just abandon ship and make a lot of people mad. Then they try and make some stupid tournament of 12 teams (well not even a tourny) that doesn't even go through all the way. And did the "ALL STAR" match ever happen??? Who picked that list??? I know it is just all a matter of opinion, but I think there were some great names that should of been on there before some of the ones who did make the list. I think the CXG organizers could of saved it ... but they CHOSE to let it fail! ! ! And I was honestly looking forward to the girl CS tournament too.

P.S. First it was a bad start for the Steam Network, then Condition Zero gets ridicolously delayed, then delayed again for the PC version, then HL2 is put off, not to mention the still buggy Steam with bugs that should of been fixed during Beta stage, instead we have been bored with the small weekly updates. Now this latest thing with CXG ... Is anyone else losing faith in the whole CS scene??? Not the game itself, but the big wigs who seem like they want to disappoint us over and over again? I really hope that the money system change and upcoming CPL Summer help repair our hearts that have been broken by these jerks.

Shame for CxG. They could have done better with those sponsors and lot of money.

Back on october I set up a CS LAN tournament here in Murcia (Spain), multiple matches were running simultaneously with some DoD ones. There was no single problem running Steam (when was much more buggier)... We had 96mb/s...

I guess that CXG just made a poor planning... Just see, the other matches failed too except UT...

Understaffed. Next time don't be. That's really all there is to say. Underprepared as well.

Seriously, I want video games to be as big as books, movies, or TV. They're a form of entertainment. And e-sports is just as big (or bigger) than some real-life sports (like badmitton--I'd like to think e-sports is bigger than badmitton, yes?).

I hope the sponsors will be willing to sponsor e-sports again. Just not CXG until they can prove they won't make this mistake again.
