The Future Of E-Sports?

A new CS movie has been released which intends to "show how gaming could be presented as a viable spectator sport". I've downloaded this 185Mb behemoth by Simonb, and it's both interesting and entertaining.



The film features a match between the English FourKings CS team & the French armaTeam at The Intel Extreme Edition Challenge. Cryus Malekani (aka proZaC) presents a great deal of the 24 minute show, which is very professional in execution.



The movie is very much like a traditional sports show, with pre-match interviews, flashy map overviews and interesting, informed commentary. I could certainly see this sort of idea extended to a 45 minute television show - it's that good.

Just about to download, let's hope it's a goodun. Even so, I have a few friends in the TV industry and I get the impression from them that, at least in the UK, it would be hard to sell the format mainly because of the violent and terrorist based themes of CS. I know that for my part, the fact that the game is terrorists versus counters is purely ephemeral to the gameplay, but many of the censors wouldn't see it that way. That's why we end up with trite such as "FightBox" on the BBC :/

I still can't quite get into any of watching it. Seeing a bunch of teens moving mice quickly vs watching a wide receiver make a one handed aerial catch just doesn't compare, at least in my book. At best, maybe paralleling bowling and the world series of poker (which can be interesting for a few minutes at a time) but largely makes you just want to turn it off and play yourself.



With enough time spent playing, just about anyone can be pretty darn good/amazing/close to the best at a video game, but you could spend a lifetime catching footballs and never be a pro wide receiver.

lol. I think that pretty much sums up e-sports.

not anyone can be "close to the best", given time. if you've seen the pros (lvl40s) at it in warcraft 3, it's the same thing here i think. u need immense amount of talent/coordination/teamwork to be good in certain challenging online games. that makes it a "viable spectator sports".



how many can be a Showtime.werra (well known korean wc3 player) or a SK/3d cs-team?
