    CPL Winter News

Jess Cliffe, co-creator of Counter-Strike, and Eric Smith of VALVe Software will be attending the CPL Winter event. It seems the two will be assisting the CPL staff in setting up on offline content server for Steam. As most of us know, Steam will not function without an Internet connection. Cliffe and Eric will also stick around for interviews with the gaming press. You can find the rest of the news release right over here Now, I need to find out how to "borrow" a press pass.[break="click here for more info"]
The CPL announced that Jess Cliffe, co-creator of the original Counter-Strike and current Project Lead for Valve Software, will be attending the CPL PentiumĀ® 4 Processor Winter 2003 Championship. Accompanying "Cliffe" will be Eric Smith, Software Developer for Valve Software.

At the CPL Event, Cliffe and Eric will be assisting the tournament directors in setting up an offline Steam content server for the $100,000 Half-Life Counter-Strike Championship. Additionally, they will be available for press interviews from Tuesday, December 16th through Wednesday, December 17th.

The CPL has been using Counter-Strike as the primary tournament game for three years, and has seen the size of its events steadily grow. Cliffe stated, "We couldn't be happier about the fantastic growth of the CPL."

if an offline content server is in the works for the CPL, might we see a variation of this released to the public, for those who wish to host their own lans or attend cyber cafes w/o internet connections (which if you think about it is contrary to the name "cyber")? 'twould be cool.

That would be awesome, although in the meantime, they should just use a different authentication scheme for LAN play. People can get the content in advance of their LANs, and play it when they get there.

The old version of HL only allowed LAN play on the same class C network (first three numbers in the IP address must be the same), why on earth can't they do this in the newest version?

So they've got to put a server in to act like a Steam Content server so the computers on the LAN think they're on the internet....

Why don't they just add LAN support?
