Electronic Punk wrote..WON is different because it didn't use bandwidth whenever you do ANYTHING. Honestly, how often do you remember WON being down? I remember it going down twice, for an hour each time. Steam is easier to target because the fake traffic adds a boatload of requests to an already huge set of legitimate requests.
And WON is different how?

For about 4 hours Thursday night, Steam service was interrupted. After that time, service continued to be slow until about 11:00 am PST today (Friday). These problems were caused by device failure on our network following a power outage. We apologize for the inconvenience -- we're currently increasing redundancy in these areas to prevent this from happening in the future.

Contradicting excuses, but which is to be believed?
One way or another, someone's trying to cover something up. Either they want to cover their vulnerability of being DDoS'ed, or they want to cover up their faulty hardware and the possibility of their other hardware failing as well.Comment

This won't stop steam. Steam is here to stay. They'll just keep plugging away at it until their happy with it... and if their track record with HL/CS is any indication of when that will be, I'd say never.
Who cares if it is a DOS, or hardware failure, or a bit of both. Valve Doesn't have any onus to report anything to us except that it's down. They could have just said, "Steam will be down for a few hours, sorry for the inconvenience." Then this would just be a thread about how much Valve and Steam sucks.
I mean you're right DarkMenace. Whenever something goes on, they should phone every Valve employee, even if they're sleeping or off for the weekend, and tell them exactly what's going on so every employee knows the scoop. Just in case we email or run into them, we can say... "what is the network status of steam?" and they will be able to quote us the current status. They should also fire all the guys who think there may be a problem, and try to think of what it may be. Like network connectivity going out because of a DOS attack, or a hardware failure. They aren't paid to think. Hey Valve just fix the problem you psychic mofos!Comment
